SPIRITUAL: Christian Rock, SPIRITUAL: Contemporary Christian
Benjamin Daydreamer, whose real name is Harry Benjamin Marinen, grew up in a Christian home in the Swedish countryside. His parents are originally from Finland as well as his grandmother, while his grandfather was from Ukraine. He and his older brother, Leif, were both born in Sweden...
His career as a musician began in the early 1980s at the mere age of 10, when he had the opportunity to play the drums in music school. Benjamin got his first drums, a set of red Maxwins, which he enjoyed jamming on while listening with earphones to good Christian artists on old vinyl records...
Since graduating from high school he has been working as a caregiver for disabled people, as well as in home healthcare. In the spring of 2007, he completed the registered nursing program and has been working the night shift in a nursing home for patients with dementia since 2005. And now Benjamin has turned his focus to becoming a full-time artist in the music business...
Benjamin's mother replaced the old Fazer piano for a KORG poly 800, which became the launching pad for Benjamin´s creative spirit within his genre. This led to his first studio recording at Key Studio in Ulricehamn, in February of 1986. He recorded a song titled "Walk to the Intensity of Light", on which he himself recorded all the tracks manually with the synthesizer, sang and played on Simmons digital drums...
It was during this time in his life, his early teenage years, when he decided to accept Jesus and was born again. He was baptized in water and shortly after that he was spiritually confirmed into the body of Christ during a Pentecostal youth camp. The Pentecostal movement was an influence during his growing-up years, and it is through this movement that he has been provided with opportunities for spiritual nourishment, fellowship and growth as a young musician. He was playing drums in the youth choir´s gospel songs, but he preferred to write songs on the synthesizer, piano or guitar. He recorded these songs in a simple home studio, a so called portable studio. Later on in 1988, he invested in a KORG M1 which was a more powerful workstation for songwriters.
During his teenage years, he also started a Christian synthpop/rock band named "Heaven Mental", which consisted of four members including his brother Leif. After one performance, Benjamin decided to become a solo artist, working on his own material so that he could develop his own style of music. Benjamin´s first serious record release came in 1989. It was a 13 track instrumental project called "Prince of Peace â Jesus Christ", of which 250 copies were made...
Benjamin graduated from high school in 1989, studying two years of economics. He applied to a musical high school, but he was not accepted due to his poor knowledge of music theory. But Benjamin did not give up; instead he managed to get a performance in the high school auditorium on June 6th, 1989, before a capacity crowd...
He moved away from home when he was 18 years old, and began working as a night concierge in a hotel. He was living in a studio apartment and he produced music with the help of a M1 keyboard and a personal computer Atari, and he used his first TV as a monitor. He found it more productive to write music than to watch TV. He received inspiration from the Word of God, the Holy Bible, other worthwhile Christian literature as well as life experiences from different situations. When Benjamin was 20, he served as a military chaplain for children and youth. He gathered a group of musically talented youth and he practiced with them and inspired them to continue to develop as musicians, which resulted in the creation of a band named "Frontlight" and the release of an EP-single.
In 1991-92 Benjamin studied for a year to become an evangelist in a Baptist missionary school. He had the opportunity to attend a bible school in the mornings and work with street mission planning, cafeteria business and charitable work. This year shaped his life in many ways. God revealed to Benjamin how the power of His love can change people´s lives. Jesus became both a personal friend to Benjamin as well as the One who guides, restores and saves every individual who truly and sincerely seeks God with all of his heart...
In 1994, while attending a Saturday bible school called "Shalom over Israel", he met a pretty and god-fearing woman named Gabriella. Benjamin went to God in sincere prayer for several weeks to find inspiration and guidance in determining if it was meant to be. At one prayer meeting there was a man who had a vision where he saw two white cords knit between the hearts of Benjamin and Gabriella. To Benjamin this was a sign and confirmation from God that this was in accordance with His plan. From that moment they began their journey together. They were married, and now 13 years later they have three wonderful children: 11 year old Josua, 8 year old Noomi and 3 year old Hanna.
It is natural for the Marinen family to talk about Jesus and to study His Word and sing praises to His glory and honor. The Marinens believe in living a Christian lifestyle by saying grace before each meal, praying daily and spending quality time together. They believe God is present in their everyday life through the ministering of angels. It is important to live in the world, but not to be of the world, and to learn to balance life in accordance with the Word of God and to grow into a God-fearing couple with roots in the love of Christ....
In the 1995s, Benjamin made a studio recording named "Holy Hill" (only demo version), which is based on Psalm 15. In 2001 a landmark production came about when Benjamin turned 30 and he came out with an instrumental album named, "Handmade Love", which was released on a CD and consisted of 15 tracks recorded on a Yamaha PSR-630 keyboard. This was the commencement of Benjamin's vision of producing his own material. In 2003, a project with Benjamin and his father became a reality when they released a maxi-single in Finnish named "Puolestasi" (For Your Sake). One of Benjamin´s friends, Harri Kosonen, sang on some of the tracks. Another one of his friends, Daniel Hämäläinen, has co-produced several of Benjamin´s music projects and been involved in other ways the last five years.
"Face", which will be released in July of 2007, is a studio project which began in 2004. Benjamin has done at least 20 different versions of this song during the last three years. At last, it will be released together with the Praisepop song "Majesty", which also includes another cover version that was recorded during the spring of 2007 together with some of his friends (Samuel Reman, Daniel Hämäläinen, Samuel Gustafsson, Henric Bremer och Magnus Lindhe), the TAR songs "Better World" and " Different Story" will also be included.
In January 2007, Benjamin began his life vision by starting a record company, Robe Records, which now is on the brink of its first release with the EP-single "Face" by the artist and producer Benjamin Daydreamer. The music is influenced by the 80s synthpop and American studiopop/West Coast rock. He likes to mix different sounds from his syntheziser KORG X50, such as melodies, harmonies, rhythms and basses as well as acoustic instruments. This is the style that Benjamin calls TAR-music, Total Analog Rush, which is a concept that he and his friend Peter Johansson created. Another style is Praisepop, which is particularly evident in the two tracks of "Majesty", taken from Psalm 149:6: "May the praise of God be in their mouth and a double-edged sword in their hands". "Majesty" touches the very heart and soul of Benjamin´s goal, which is to get youth around the world, both Christian and non-believers, more interested in what Christian Praisepop music is and that it can be expressed in many different ways.
