Billy Southern resides in a wooded area in northern Minnesota. The last name "Southern" actually has little to do with the "South" as it's simply a partial translation of his Swedish surname.
The songs he creates vary from up beat songs about guys getting into trouble, with the law, women, liqour, social norms, etc. to heart felt anti-war songs, or songs that remenice about a lost friend/time and place. There's a simplicity to his music, yet it comes across as deep and resounding.
Billy can usually be found playing at bars and coffee houses around Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. You'll typically see him playing with Barry Schwartz, an accomplished blues guitarist from Duluth, Minnesota. The two have been traveling around, playing together for a couple of years now. This started after Billy's other folk duo "First Time Offenders" hit a snag when Billy's cousin and First Time Offenders partner moved to North Carolina, to settle down. Still look for an album from that combination in the future.
On the album "Swamp Dog," Billy, Barry and Karl Anderson, (bass), did the body of the recording. Ashley Northey sings on four of the tracks, and Charlie Parr plays banjo with Billy and Barry on "Wagon Train," a song they recorded in Billy's living room.
In Billy's own words:
"Writing music is no different than writing a story, or painting a picture. The medium is different of course, but what you are trying to achieve is something that comes from somewhere within and has to get out. Artists are not mad, they're just not understood for the most part. They are passionate about their work in a world that tends to get more plastic with each passing day. I was an English major in college, so I guess it's no wonder I think in this way. I have a novel in the works that should be out within a year or two. I don't think of myself as a musician. I'm just using that medium to convey a message. I could have picked interprative dance but I dance like an old timer on LSD--not a pretty sight. I hope you buy a cd and help support the cause.
