A blues-rock barbecue seasoned with Brownfield's special rub- a blend of hard-bitten Delta personality, big-city grit and a dash of rockabilly bravado- and served up smokin'.
7 MP3 Songs
ROCK: British Blues, BLUES: Rockin' Blues
Details:
Bruce Brownfieldâs Ice Cold Fire is the first national release by this Northeast Ohio performer and songwriter, an interesting mix of seven songs chosen from his broad and ever-growing catalog. Lots of people are serving up Blues with a rock and roll flavor but Brownfield mixes in a hard-bitten Delta personality, a dash of rockabilly bravado and some big-city grit. Cooked up down-home style and served smoking, Ice Cold Fire is perfect for a night of drinking, fighting and loving.
Being a native North Coast rocker who spent quite a few years living elsewhere means Brownfield draws from a deep well of influences- from funky urban blues in Work (penned by friend and guitarist Godfrey Stevens), wide open through the mojo romp of Railyard Blues and straight to the Delta, all alone, on Handyman. Open Road is a thoughtful look back at freedom that still calls in the night, while the almost-country-rock Looking At The Blues ponders eternal questions with both wit and wisdom. HardLuck and The Key are straight-ahead rock and roll songs with some interesting twists- The Key is driven by some energetic Brownfield-style slide guitar, while HardLuck features "Crash" Kowall harp work that starts out tame enough but comes out the victor in a dogfight with the lead guitar as the song ends.
Brownfieldâs soulful vocals deliver intelligent, moving, and sometimes cutting lyrics over music that is familiar enough for comfort, but the songs are each unique and original. Though primarily a vocalist and bassist by trade he also provides some well-played guitar, most notably his finger-style blues on Handyman and all of the guitars on the afore-mentioned HardLuck and The Key. The recordings, whether self-produced or engineered and co-produced by Dustin J. Elliott at Absolute Music Production, have a well-mixed "live" sound that captures the feel of the music as it was recorded. Feature performances by Alan Greene, John âSlapâ Daubenspeck, Rob Luoma, Roy Lipscomb, "Crash" Kowall, Tim Lane, Godfrey Stevens and M.D. Banques are consistently excellent and provide solid foundations to support Brownfield's stylistic versatility as a writer and performer.
A note from Bruce Brownfield-
Like a late 60's Rolling Stones album, these songs are just a reflection of the music I enjoy, the life I live and how it all comes back out in my songwriting. I don't write songs for a market, I just do what I like and when other people enjoy it with me that's a great payback. My apologies to those who expected more of the same old thing.
