âA Molotov cocktail wrapped in a filo pastryâ. Says Jonathon Torrens of the Trailer Park Boys about what he has heard of Cynthia Russellâs live performance, but this is merely a stab at summarizing what is one dimension of her gripping words, melodies and themes. For her debut CD âTo a Songâ, Cynthia has created an album of varying genres, approaches and themes that reflect her countless musical travels and influences - from Joni Mitchell to Tom Waits, from Kelly Clarkson to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. - A little bit of the spirit of Sunday morning and Friday night all mixed into one; after listening you donât know if you feel like hauling back deep on cigarette or trying to quit all your dirty habits and begin soaring with the ravens. Thematic lyrics, fresh, and reassuring melodies are what sets Cynthiaâs music apart and ahead. She has a comprehensive soul and âTo a Songâ is addictive not only in pieces but in its entirety. This songstress is a perpetual world traveler by whatever means is available. She has been broadcast internationally, she has climbed some of the highest peaks on the planet and is a pioneer in her approach to life, arts and music. Leaving home at sixteen, gave her a head start on her studies of theater, languages and music to which she has always been drawn. âBorn sixth in a family of ten I have always been a sentinel for myself- busy watching and imagining and writing.âFrom living on a 12 by 12 house boat on the Great Slave Lake of the North West Territories, to jumping off that bridge in the no manâs land between Zambia and Zimbabwe over the Zambezi, she has gathered insights and savored sights that she has pocketed and used to embellish her subconscious scrap book. âThe real ones are too much work and anyway they fade.â She has performed in places like the historic Wild Cat Café in Yellowknife, recently at the Northern Arts and Culture Center in YK where she released her CD âTo a Songâ and she has performed to an international audience on Sounds Like Canada with host Shelagh Rogers. Along with the perilous task of teaching Language Arts to High School students (to which she attributes her knowledge of the language), song writing, singing, playing guitar and a little percussion she has recently been dabbling in production. She co-produced her debut CD with Steve McGonigle from Black Box Studios in Edmonton to which the legendary Gateway Mastering Studios gave a phenomenal finished sound. Her CD features some of Canadaâs best - including Juno Award winning Jeremiah McDade who plays soprano Saxophone, flutes and does inspiring harmonies, and several stars from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Familiar with the heart break of the euphemism of co-parenting, she writes of a childâs longing for both mother and father. She writes of break ups. She personifies melody and poetry. She pleads with drug addicts, and laments futility. Nothing and no one is left untouched.
