âcandy fish barrelâ continues dadalaâs mission of musical mutation and mind-bending blends, opening a portal to a surreal cyber-rustic dreamscape of altered perception where the familiar becomes strange and the odd becomes strangely familiar. Swampy soundscape, plasma-injected bossa nova, evocative trans-genre instrumentals and epic rumble-clatter lead your consciousness away from the mundane out to the periphery, with visceral entertainment along the way.

dadalaâs 6th album and first CD release predominantly features source material from Johann Meier and Michael Chocholak, two of dadalaâs regular contributors and frequent collaborators with RDunlap, providing a range of material including electronically generated audio samples, field recordings, and instrumental performances: guitar, sax, trumpet, keyboards, percussion, objects, animal vocals... The album also features a long track constructed from a classic early recording by RDunlap and Steve Peckman in 1985/87 and recent (2006/7) synthesizer recordings by RD.


dadala is produced by RDunlap working exclusively with existing recordings contributed by others and from his own archives. The audio material (always used strictly with permission of the original artists, and in many cases provided specifically for dadala's use) is combined, remixed, arranged, rearranged, and modified.

The results explore synchronicity and trans-temporal improvisation; sculpting new and unique musical expressions not restricted by convention but also not without reference to it; both celebrating and transcending familiarities, bridging the âexperimentalâ and the âaccessibleâ, and stimulating alternative perception of music and its possibilities. RDunlapâs personal influences include jazz, progressive rock, avant-garde, Latin and âworld musicâ of various sorts, free improvisation, electronica and pop, and all these styles find their way into the dadala mix, in some way.


Michael Chocholak has been active in non-mainstream music since the days of the independent cassette scene. Although he began by writing & performing in the regular pop idioms of rock, blues, jazz and folk, he secretly pursued a life of bizarre sonic alchemy, zig-zagging for years before tipping over almost completely into exploring various abstract electroacoustic and electronic musics. His contributions to candy fish barrel include sax and trumpet improvisations, electronic environments and rhythms, and more.

Johann Meier has a background of live jazz piano and synthesizer performance as well as sundry other instrumental diversions, and as the heart of the band Jopy produces electronic audio collages that blend layers of radically altered field recordings, vocal samples, children's instruments, found percussion, conventional instruments, and algorithmic synthesizers. Meierâs contributions to candy fish barrel include electronic material, guitar performances and beats. In other recordings he also brings piano and bass to the dadala table.

Dunlap and Meier also collaborate as PcOnTrApTiOn, which functions somewhat like dadala with RD arranging and mixing source material from Meier (along with some of his own synthesizer recordings), but with more grounding in the rhythms and textures of experimental electronica.

RDunlap has been recording music outside the mainstream since 1985, with alternative / experimental / exploratory attitude and techniques; arriving at destinations exotic, idiosyncratic and sometimes challenging but not without visceral appeal, musical reference and conceptual chewiness.


dadala began in 2004, initially (and still) recycling original material from RDunlapâs archives (improvisations and projects with others and solo). By 2005 dadala began also to incorporate recordings from other artists as online connections and discoveries happened and friendships were made.

Having released 5 quasi-albums online in mp3 format for free downloads, the 6th album candy fish barrel is dadalaâs first official CD release. It is being released concurrently with a sampler CD of selections from the first 5 albums.
