Drawing inspiration from classic jazz vocalists (Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald), modern-day chanteuses (Eleni Mandell, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux), and denizens of the Los Angeles alt-country scene (Randy Weeks, Mike Stinson, Tony Gilkyson), with Charlieâs Lonely Sunday, her third album and first to be released on the Boronda Records label, Dafni presents a collection of 13 songs spanning a range of genres from the rockabilly hoedown of the opener âDimesâ to tracks featuring Latin (âLetâs Pretendâ, âLonely Sundayâ), country (âThis One Danceâ, âNever Tell You Whyâ), Americana (âBroken Letterâ, âCarried Awayâ), and jazz-tinged (âComplicatedâ, âHoney Honeyâ) grooves. Dafniâs band had grown so comfortable playing together during a year of regular performances that they recorded the basic tracks for all of these songs liveâvocals includedâin a single day at producer Charlie McGovernâs Big Olâ Studio in North Hollywood (two of the songs were later rerecorded on another dayâagain live), providing the album with a consistency that captures the vibe of the bandâs shows. In addition to 11 of Dafniâs original compositions, Charlieâs Lonely Sunday contains a Cajun-style cover of labelmate Tracy Huffmanâs âBottom of a Wellâ and a country rompâthe saucy âDown and Dirtyââco-written with L.A. songstress Sarah Stanley.
