Description:
Jazz Ears. Pop Head. Folk Heart. The nucleus is jazz trio, yet this grooves through worlds informed as much by post-Dylan confessional song as jazz improv. Accessible, eclectic, intelligent vocals to inspire tears and guitar playing to give you chills.
10 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk-Jazz, JAZZ: Jazz-Pop
Details:
Dave Thompson has been sitting around a lot. Over the past several years heâs been riding a squeaky black chair across his studioâs hardwood floor.* But after having spent considerable time in low-lit studios producing and playing on other peoplesâ projects, heâs now out riding planes, subway trains and minivans, bringing you his eclectic and personal guitar playing and singing style.
As a guitarist-for-hire, Dave not only plays regularly with Juno award winner and Order of Canada recipient Susan Aglukark, but you can catch Dave playing some jazzy guitar alongside Kevin Ramessar with award-winning, Juno-nominated, groove-based-jazz singer and songwriter Kellylee Evans.
Also, he has recently toured across Canada playing jazz festivals in Montreal, Toronto & Vancouver (opening for Chris Botti), Edmonton, Calgary and Saskatoon. And at the Vancouver Folk and Vancouver Island music festivals he played with Hawksley Workman, Ndidi Onukwulu, Madagascar Slim, Sarah-Jane Morris, The Wailinâ Jennies and many more.
Yes, Dave studied guitar and composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Yes, heâs played on hundreds of gigs (many with Kenny Munshaw) at summer resorts, weddings, clubs, and in musical theatre, radio and TV, as well as on many CDs as a sideman.
But what he really loves to do more than anything is write music and perform it for you. So he has just released his latest CDââfound. Wanting.ââand now has a shiny disc with 10 jazz-pop-folk songs that heâs sure youâll love! You should buy one (join the mailing list too).
As for this latest music, there are echoes of Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Sting, George Benson, and even John Mayer here, but Dave Thompson has been writing and performing this personal style of music for as long as any of his fans, friends, colleagues (and mom) can remember.
Expertly produced, written, arranged, recorded, edited and mixed by Dave, this album finds its foundation in an archetypal jazz guitar trio. Yet the music moves and grooves through stylistic worlds that are informed as much by post-Dylan and Joni Mitchell confessional song craft and the essentials of good pop musicârobust songs, vocals and beatsâas by standard songs, jazz improvisation and arrangers like Gil Evans.
This is an accessible, yet unique and eclectic performing and writing style: Intelligent, masterfully crafted music and lyrics, professional arrangements and record production, and a voice that can bring you to tears with guitar playing that will give you chills.
*So for exercise he gets out and plays hockey as a goalie
