The only thing singer/songwriter deirdre has been able to count on in her life is change - constant and often cataclysmic change. This amazing woman has lived many lives in her short lifetime, and it has created an artist of grace and beauty, whose flowing music weaves around the soul piercing lyrics and haunting melodies which are her trademarks and which move all who hear her perform them.
deirdreâs father was killed in a freak motorcycle accident on Christmas Eve when she was only seven years old. Because her mother was so profoundly depressed by her husbandâs death, the small girl had to raise herself. By age eleven she was an adult masquerading in a childâs body, smoking cigarettes, boozing with kids much older than she, even stealing cars. By 13, she was a full blown drug addict, living on her own in Atlanta, Georgia.
Uncertain how to control her reckless daughter, deirdreâs mother decided they, along with her two younger brothers, would move to Sonora, a small town in California. Three weeks later, deirdre, now thirteen, was hospitalized with Guillian-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder which left her totally paralyzed for three months, recovering for years and still affects her health today if she allows herself to get too physically tired.
But good changes began when her mother dragged the unwilling teenager to a Bobby McFerrin concert; deirdre fell in love with jazz improvisation. She began singing with McFerrin, and with Bobby Shue, Carl Anderson, Cornelius Bumpus, and others. When she met up with Mentor and teacher Phil Mattson, he told the seventeen year old girl, âWe know you have talent. We donât ever have to talk about that again. Now you have a responsibility.â
Mattson asked deirdre to study at his school, which she did for two years, living, breathing, and drinking in music. After graduating valedictorian of her class, she moved to Boston to pursue her next dream â singing with Pat Metheny. Through the help of a friend and fellow musician, she was able to sit in on a gig. She sang jingles in the studio during the day and jazz in clubs at night.
A few years later, she married a musician and they cut two records of contemporary jazz together. Then, in 1993, the couple moved to Nashville to be in a music industry town and thatâs when the next cataclysmic change occurred. Her daughter was born with a very serious heart condition, requiring multiple surgeries, so deirdre dropped everything to care for her child.
When deirdre divorced at her daughterâs age of 3, she began writing her own songs. Out of a need that arose from the challenges she faced with her daughter, an artist was born, and deirdre began the journey of finding her own voice in a blend of her early musical influences merged with her Welsh genes. Several of the songs on her CD, deidre, reflect this shattering time.
Such as âOne,â the incredibly beautiful mantra she wrote during one of her daughterâs toughest surgeries. deirdre sang it over and over to keep herself and Emma anchored and at one with the planet.
Itâs an example of deirdreâs constantly evolving spiritual quest, and a far cry from the angry child who rejected a God that took her father away from her and let her get lost in a scary world of drugs. Deirdre has come to know herself a part of the plan of the universe, but it wasnât until recently that she began viewing her God and her Muse as the same entity.
âThe God that creates a beautiful tree, a flower, a mountain, that God also creates a poem or a song. So I know now that God and my Muse are One.â
