Bio and Review

Don Pollard hails from Richmond, Virginia from a musical family. His father and two of his brothers played and sang. He started in local bands as a teen-ager and at just 17 years of age, left home with a road band. He has played professionally since.
When he was young, he performed with soul artists such as Joe Tex, Johnny C, and Gladys Knight. He came to Louisville in 1982 and joined with Jill Thorp and the Beat Boys, among other local groups. In 1992, he became guitarist and band director of the Hall of Fame group The Impressions. With them, he toured all over the world. He directed the band until 2002, when he returned to Louisville. He has worked in local clubs since with groups such as Robbie Bartlett, and currently Jerry Greene. He has been fortunate to connect with John Hayes and Mark Richardson and re-connect with Jerry Holiday, and he enjoys working with them immensely every Tuesday at Lisaâs Oak Street Lounge.
An interesting side story: When Don was 21 (back in 1971), he and his band mates took up a collection to help unknown Bruce Springsteen get enough gasoline to get Bruce back to his home in New Jersey.
On August 4th, 2007, the music critic Jeffrey Lee Puckett of the Louisville Courier-Journal reviewed this CD and stated that "Pollard . . . has an unmistakable tenor that's the Southern gentleman version of blue-eyed soul. It's supple, tender and deceptively strong... His guitar playing is even better ... " He further stated, "...the highlight is Curtis Mayfield's "Choice of Colors," which Pollard sings with a gracful elegance and a whole lot of soul."
