I moved to Nashville in 2002. It truly is Music City, USA. I like how youâre surrounded by crazy music types wherever you go. Sort of like LA, where I lived for a bit, where everyone had screenplays or headshots in their cars. Here, itâs CDs and myspace pages. And you can forget about your six degrees of separation! Here, itâs more like three degrees. Everybody (and I mean everybody) knows somebody who knows Keith Urbanâs drummer. Or Sara Evansâ stylist. Or the guy who wrote No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.

I wasnât sure I wanted to move here. I mean, even though I was raised in Indiana, Iâd spent almost 20 years in NYC and loved it. And I wasnât even a country music fan (or at least I didnât think I was.) But then I started to listen to some of the great songs coming out of here around that time: Bring On the Rain, The Good Stuff, Help Me Understand, Forgive, and probably the
one that lit the biggest under-the-ass fire, Iâm Movinâ On. So there I was, and now here I am.

Nashville is a competitve place and I go back and forth between hiding behind a real job that never really satisfies me, and doing this - which is all I've ever really wanted to do. I write a lot about relationships. I'm fascinated by them: good ones, bad ones, make-believe ones. People say my music makes them laugh, cry, and remember. I just want it to make them feel.

So, maybe Iâm here to stay. Any town that harbors writers like Darrell Scott, Marcus Hummon and Jeffrey Steele is just fine by me. And welcoming in newcomers like Lori McKenna only makes it that much sweeter. They write songs that move people. Thatâs all Iâm trying to do. Thanks for the time. Enjoy the music.
