The GRIP is a funky-soul band from Memphis, TN that is single-handedly bringing the boogaloo sound back to the streets and we invite everyone out to "shake yo' tail feathers" to these classic sounds. The Boogaloo style was created in Spanish Harlem through a mash-up of Latin dance grooves and soulful rhythm and blues, but quickly made it's way across the country and into clubs and jukeboxes. It was then the African-American experience began to dominate the sound. The organ trios and quartets provided this "soundtrack to the inner-city" by combining syncopated grooves with call and response melodies - all with the sensitivity of jazz and the sweat and fire of a gospel preacher. Although Boogaloo may have had a Northern pedigree, it was honed and refined by Booker T. and the MG's, the Mar-Keys, and Willie Mitchell's Quintet from right here in Memphis. And that's where the GRIP is stepping in to re-introduce the South to the deep grooves that were the soundtrack of the 1960's and '70's!! Boogaloo is music that dares you not to be moved!!! The GRIP digs deep in the soil and turns out the true "cash crop" of the Mid-South and beyond - BOOGIE!!!! Our song list is comprised of the finest funk chestnuts from yester-year. In one night, you will hear music made famous by such great artists as Lonnie Smith, Big John Patton, Jimmy Smith, Idris Muhammad, Lou Donaldson, the Mar-Keys, Grant Green, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and George Benson.
