Karla Crawford BIOGRAPHY

With her girl next door good looks and easy-going nature, it might be tempting to merely accept Karla Crawford as just another typical country girl who can sing. But that wouldnât be entirely accurate. True, she was raised in small town Ontario (Midland), ran the gamut of community talent contests at the local United church, and she did run the karaoke at the local bar, but that would be a story youâve heard before and Karla Crawford is anything but typical.

Karla feels that music is her calling and that her whole life has been a series of events that, once lived and
properly aligned, would result in her reaching this point - the release of her first album, âBlame It On Somethingâ. She has somewhat of a musical family history, both of her grandmothers being pianists and songwriters and her father a drummer in local bands. But Karla is not so much merely a product of her background as much as she is something bigger than what was expected of her. She is imbued with a determined streak that at times defies her conventional upbringing.

Her earliest musical influence was Elvis Presley and it would be honest to say that more likely than not, there is an Elvis CD in her car stereo at any given moment. In particular, she gravitates towards Presleyâs covers of some of countryâs most influential artists - Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe and Ernest Tubbs, and therefore she learned the nature of being a song stylist. To discourage the impression that her tastes might be one dimensional, she would also admit to being under the influence of James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Patty Loveless, Leanne Womack, and Anne Murray.

Although Karla is a songwriter, the material she records and performs is a group effort. âBlame It On Somethingâ incorporates a handful of collaborative writing match-ups, most notably including Karla and Nashville based hit songwriter Tim Taylor. John Dymond, who co-produced with Tom McKillip, plays band leader (and bass) to a whoâs-who of seasoned session pros through a collection of polished, contemporary country that would sound as at home on a pick-up truck stereo in some rural backwater thirty years ago as it would on major market country radio today. Itâs a long way from the coffee-table stage performances Karla presented for her family as a youngster.

And bigger stages Karla has seen, having shared the bright lights with Terri Clark, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Porter Wagoner, Lee Greenwood, Brad Paisley, Michelle Wright, Jason McCoy and others. A tall drink of water armed with a kinetic energy, Karla can take a stage with poise and panache, having learned her craft and earned her wings working the fairs, resorts and conventions circuit.

Deep-seated traditional values aside, Karla is very much a modern artist. She might have set out to make the sort of country record that a girl who likes brown gravy on just about anything might make, but inadvertently made a record that canât be narrowly defined. âBlame It On Somethingâ is the sound of a clever girl from the country whoâs ambition took her from the backroads to the blacktop, and left a trail of gravel dust to follow home.
