Details:
Mark and Sabrina Arbuckle have been singing and playing music all of their lives. Overdue is their debut album. Its 14 original songs are the culmination of years of listening to and performing a vast range of musical styles from multiple genres. Their music is reminiscent of Crosby Stills and Nash, early Linda Ronstadt, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
Mark wrote all of the songs, sings, and plays all of the instrumentsâguitars, bass, drums, mandolin, keyboardsâon Overdue. He comes from a family of musicians going back many generations. Mark began playing drums professionally in his fatherâs country and western band in 1972 when he was 10 years old. Playing clubs, âjointsâ and county fairs throughout north Missouri while growing up, he became well versed in the songs of Hank Williams Sr., George Jones and Merle Haggard. At the age of 14 he and two classmates formed a rock trio playing Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company and Uriah Heep covers. The band eventually split and Mark gave up playing live music to focus on writing and recording songs. During much of the 1990s Mark put music on the back burnerâperforming intermittentlyâwhile earning a masters degree and a Ph.D. in mass communication (he is currently a professor at Pittsburg State University in Kansas). In 2000 Dr. Arbuckle, inspired by his then fiancée Sabrina, began writing new songs. They were married the following year and formed a musical partnership. The birth of their son Will in 2003 added further inspiration and led to more new songs.
Sabrina, who sings, and plays piano on âBleeding Kansas,â also comes from a long line of musicians. Her grandmother could play nearly anything she ever heard on the piano and, although always low on money, she always had a piano. Her mother had a large, rich, soprano voice that thrilled audiences and her family. Sabrinaâs great grandfather was a traveling fiddle player throughout Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas at the turn of the 20th Century. Sabrina began classical piano training at the age of 5, as her father had, but she has been singing with her parents and two sisters for as long as she can remember. Sabrina studied classical piano for 14 years and was a frequent accompanist as a teenager. Throughout childhood she performed in Musical Theater in a variety of venues. She grew up intimately familiar with the works of classical composers, but she was also enamored with classic Broadway musicals and artists ranging from Al Jolson and Scott Joplin to Dolly Parton and Woody Guthrie. Sabrina spent 10 years in New York and Chicago going to graduate school and working in non-musical jobs. Currently Sabrina works in International Banking. She came home to Missouri in 1999 and became Markâs partner (and Willâs Mama) in music and in life.
Overdue is an apt title for this CD. Some of the songs, if not the actual recordings, have been decades in the making. From silly to sublime and from poignant to passionate, these songs are a reflection of a lifetime of experiences, moods, feelings, ideas and musical influences.
