JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo, BLUES: Jazzy Blues
Details:
Their Ideal
The musical relationship of these four musicians began in 1997. Most probably, it is this long cooperation which creates this atmosphere of familiarity at their concerts and allows the audience to bathe in their sound with an open ear and an open spirit, a sound that allows various kinds of interpretation.
The protagonistsâ motivation to be musicians derives from an idea based on musical independence and the wish to constantly defend it. They are traditional avantguardists with a burning feu-sacré: jazz is life.
They donât re-invent everything from scratch and they donât copy any seasonal fashions. The aim is rather to provoke given norms or even to break them. Virtuosity is never reduced to a means unto itself; their honest music is based on playful interpretation, a vital interplay and a risky âto and fro of ideasâ.
Personal data
Marcel Lüscher (Baden) studied the saxophone at the Jazz Schools of Berne and Basel. His teachers were George Robert, Christian Baader, Domenic Landolf and Dani Blanc. Furthermore, he spent an intensive time in the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, USA. One highlight was taking part at the International Music Festival in Sydney.
From January to August 2003 he lived in Paris. During this time he worked and performed with the chanson formation âDe rienâ and took part in CD-recordings of the triphop band âVasistasâ. He attended the masterclass of George Garzone.
Concerts with Pepe Lienhard, the Culture Centre Jazz Orchestra, the George Gruntz Workshop Big Band, Bobby Shew, Ernie Watts, Charlie Mariano, Andy Scherrer, George Robert, Dieter Ammann, Shawne Fielding Borer, Stevenâs 19, Nubya, Noisy Nap Attack, Eat the Jam (Seven), Umberto Arlati and his brothers Thomas and Roger.
Dario Bianchin (Zurich / Treviso) studied the guitar at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, and at the Jazz School in Basel, his teachers being Francis Coletta and Thomas Möckel.
He canât be placed in one category or another â he is just as much at ease with Pepe Lienhardâs Army Big Band as with the drumânâbase band âE-Luxâ. His true love, though, is jazz. Beside punk-influenced bands like âMalgâ Dario also worked with the Basel-based band âThe Simplist Manâ, Peter & David Klein, Nat Su and Herbie Kopf, and he took part in Kaspar Ewaldâs funk opera âBrambillaâ.
Dominik Schürmann (Basel) is one of northwestern Switzerlandâs most popular counter basists who has developed a great routine. He acquired his musical skills early on the piano â among others also from his father Niggi with whom he often plays to this day. He received important musical input from Isla Eckinger and Roman Dylag. His broad musical spectrum reaches from jazz and blues over latin and hip hop to the classic walz. This variety shines through in the music of bands like the âNiggi Schürmann Trioâ, âThe Urs Ramseyer Trioâ, âThe Joel Affolter Kirby Maniacsâ or âThe Thomas Möckel Trioâ. Moreover, he plays or played with Titti Winterstein, Jim Galloway, Peter & David Klein, Karl Ratzer, Sam Burckhardt, Oscar Klein, Michael Pastre, James Martin, Miguel de Cerna, John Serry, Kurt Weil, Robi Lakatos, Nubya, Marianne Racine, Domenic Landolf and Walter Jauslin.
Beni Bürgin (Zurich) is a very active fidget who appears to be in more than one place at the same time. After the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Los Angeles, USA; he studied the drums at Basel Jazz School, where he also teaches now. His incredible imaginativeness and wit led him to working with very different formations like âSchmalhansâ, âThe Wondertoysâ, âBonâs Angelsâ, âDâSchmiirâ (the Swiss German version of the pop band âThe Policeâ), Fritz Hauser oder âBaschi & The Fucking Beautifulâ.
