ELECTRONIC: Trance, ELECTRONIC: Electronica
Details:
What is kore?
Kore is best described as electronica; keyboards, electronic drums, electric guitar, and bass, mixed via studio magic into an amalgam of moods and experiences. From the ethereal intro, to the wall of sound and noise that is 'kore', to the gentle strains of 'second chance' and the funky groove of 'plumpin', kore is meant to be experienced contiguously, from beginning to end. Each song stands on it's own as well, each a complete piece that blends with the others, completing the picture like pieces of a puzzle.
Kore is great road-trip music, lending a sometimes unearthly, sometimes subterranean, occasionally groovy, and often quirky air to what you see. As it does not have any lyrical content, the meaning of each piece is your own; the more you bring to it, the more it brings back to you. The visual nature of kore makes it ideal as background for video and film work (please see www.octagonrecords.com for information about licensing this for your video projects).
Kore is unlike anything you've heard, yet is still approachable. There are rhythms and harmonies there that will rebound with most listeners, and familiarity will only increase your joy with this album.
About the artist:
Paul Grove is a keyboard player, pianist, recording engineer, songwriter, and producer for Octagon Records. With experience in diverse styles from techno and trance to classical and contemporary piano, rock and blues, to experimental jam bands, Paul has played, engineered, and produced a huge variety of music during his career.
"I was probably 3 years old when I started playing piano, I remember playing 'Chopsticks' on this old player piano we had in our house. My passion for this instrument has never waned."
After 7 years of classical piano training, Paul started writing music of his own.
"My last piano teacher got me into song writing. I was getting pretty bored with the classical and contemporary piano I was learning at the time. Although I loved, and still love classical piano, I'm just not cut out to BE a classical pianist. Songwriting really, as they say, struck a chord with me."
He started playing in his first rock band in 1988, and started working full time in the music business in 1993, eventually garnering a degree in recording engineering.
"The combination of art and science is just what I am meant to do. Playing keyboards and engineering and designing new recording products is what lights my soul. I'm truly blessed to be able to do what I am meant to do, every day."
Paul is now a principal at Octagon Records (www.octagonrecords.com) as a producer, engineer, songwriter, and musician, as well as a full time product designer for Summit Audio (www.summitaudio.com).
The history of kore:
Octagon Records recording artist Paul Grove started kore as a performance piece in the winter of 2003.
"I had just moved up to Lake Tahoe from Santa Cruz, I didn't really know anyone, so my nights were just consumed with writing and playing music. I didn't want to start on another multi-channel project, I wanted to play, play play. So I started working on this thing I called 'kore', recording to a DAT machine on 2 tracks. No overdubs, no multi-channel studio wizardry, just performing a piece of music with keyboards, effects, and my mixer. Giving yourself restraints often creates more creativity, so I started by giving myself the restraint of being able to actually play the piece live."
As the piece grew in scope and complexity, kore eventually blossomed into multiple songs with many different feels.
"I couldn't keep it to two tracks any more, it just wasn't serving the songs. I took my performances apart and laid them down, track by track, until eventually it became a whole album. That's really why kore is best listened to contiguously, as each part is supposed to work with the parts around it. Like a performance."
