Details:
Founding member Dave Harms formed partlycloudy in 1995, looking to deviate from a primarily hardcore sound that was prevalent in the greater Louisville, Ky area. partlycloudy was born going against the grain. In a music scene that was almost exclusively hardcore/metal, partlycloudy was quick to bring blues solos and understandable vocals to an audience that was used to neither. In the spring of 1999, partlycloudy lost their original drummer and Dave turned to longtime friend and musician Chris Brim to take the reins. With the addition of Chris not only did partlycloudy gain a drummer but also a songwriter with passion in his lyrics (i.e. 11:11, Memories, To the Gods).
As a trio, partlycloudy set out to record a demo in the hopes of shopping for a label and management. This brought partlycloudy to Long Island Recording Co. Owner Wil Freebody, overheard the sessions and approached Dave, Kyle, and Chris about the possibility of partlycloudy signing to LIR records, one of three labels owned and operated by Freebody. Upon signing with LIR partlycloudy set out on their first tour. Traveling from Burlington, VT to South Dakota, partlycloudy was on the road for almost four months promoting their first and only album with LIR, State of Mind. After that first tour partlycloudy set to recording a follow up to State of Mind. However, after several months of recording as the second album, Iâm Rubber, Your Glue, neared completion both partlycloudy and LIR became painfully aware that their visions for the band were headed in separate directions and Dave and Chris parted ways with Freebody and LIR.
As a trio Dave was pulling double duty as both the bandâs bassist and lead vocalist, in order to allow him more freedom to focus on his vocals and to force Dave to the front of the stage Chris asked Daveâs younger brother, Jon, to join partlycloudy. Jon had been playing bass for Freshman Year, an up and coming band in the greater Louisville, KY area at the time. Jonâs ability to run a soundboard and troubleshoot technical problems made him an instant asset to a band whose other musicians are primarily self- taught. With Jon now on board partlycloudy set out to record an EP without a label. This brought PC to Downtown Studios in the heart Louisville Ky. During the weekend before and the weekend of the 2006 Kentucky Derby partlycloudy recorded their follow-up to State of Mind a five song EP entitled Arm Your Weapons. As the city of Louisville celebrated Barbaroâs victory in The Derby, partlycloudy and producer Nick Stevenâs sat several floors above Fourth St. in downtown Louisville hammering out 5 intense and uncompromisingly unique tracks for Arm Your Weapons.
During the final days of mixing Arm Your Weapons partlycloudy realized that they had inadvertently written a second guitarist into their band. This was not a problem for any of the four current members, but presented a unique problem to the band as a whole. Where was partlycloudy going to find another guitarist accomplished enough to play these parts and willing to join a band that was already established? The answer was close to home and came in the form of Aaron Smith who had played lead guitar in Freshman Year and was now playing guitar in Pistol Pete, a hardcore metal band from the greater Louisville area. Aaron agreed to join partlycloudy in the fall of 2006.
Currently, partlycloudy is writing, recording and playing somewhere near you.
