Details:
Pherber Jones, Paul Bayze, and David Quintanar were three undergrad college kids living in the outskirts of the Pomona and Diamond Bar areas, who joined forces December 1991 in Pherber's garage. Savvy after playing tunes from Fugazi, The Cure, Joy Division, The Pixies, The Smiths, Teenage Fanclub, The Gorilla Biscuits, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, they began arranging originals. Their first gig was as early as 1992, at a little hole in the wall bar in Pomona called Munchies, a place many locals recall with fondness.
Word spread about the band. No one in Pomona or Diamond Bar had yet seen such energy from a trio fronted by a diminutive yet powerful woman playing aggressive guitar and vocals, while exhibiting incredible, high-strung stage presence, supported by Davidâs straight-edge drumming and Paulâs killer hooks on bass. People came in droves to see Pinhead at the Coffeehouse, Cup of J, and The Haven in Pomona.
In 1993 they ventured out to Hollywood to play The Roxy, The Whiskey A Go-Go, The Coconut Teazer, The Chorus Club, The Tempest, Mr. Tâs Bowl, The Garage, Rajiâs, Club Lingerie, The Martini Lounge, and The Cat Club.
In 1994, the band gained stage presence with the addition of Eric Ruelas as soulful lead guitarist. The combination of the quartetâs talents brought about a newfound identity and respect among the local bands in the Pomona post modern punk scene.
With enough money saved, they traveled north to play the California coastal cities of San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and then south to San Diego, all the while building audience strength and approval. The band had also performed live at the college radio station KUCI 88.9FM.
Since inception, Pinhead have come out with several recordings. The demo âOut of Reachâ featured songs like the popular âDespised,â having a sinister punk groove. Another recording entitled âScrape Awayâ featured songs including the melodic âFalling In.â The âDriveâ E.P. showed the bandâs progression with songs like guitar-driven âDaggerâ and âThirteenth.â The next E.P. entitled âContact Highâ had positive feedback with the inspiring âEcstacyâ and the guitar rock angst of âResinâ and âStraight-laced.â
Pinhead has matured and gained finesse with their music and Pherberâs extraordinary vocal and lyrical prowess, of which she has been compared to Patti Smith and PJ Harvey. They thrive with a new E.P. release entitled âSurfing the Afterlife,â featuring the single âCabin Feverâ, that captures the bandâs essence with Pherberâs harmonies supported by rock driven guitar, bass, and drum. Also on the album are the dark melodic Motels-ish tune âMorphineâ, the bass-fuzz driven Queenâs of the Stone Age-ish track of âAll For Money,â the more lively positive-feeling tune of âLifeâs A Gas,â and a better-than-the-original rendition of The Damnedâs âNeat Neat Neat.â
Pinhead is preparing for National radio airplay in the Fall of 2007, in support of their latest release while performing live at The Glasshouse, 51 Buckingham, The Press in Claremont, among other venues in Los Angeles.
