NOSTALGIA captures the darkness and the light â the immigrant longing for home, for love and for lost dreams through both Jewish Tango and Sephardic Songs. All music in this album, both vocal and instrumental, is by Jewish composers. The one exception is Piazzolla whose music was influenced by the New York Jewish neighborhoods where he lived as a child.
CANADIAN SOPRANO REBECCA LEVANT has just released her second CD of rarely performed Jewish music. Her debut CD âAni Maâamin/I Believe -Hebrew Yiddish & Sephardic Songs â is popular with world music lovers in North America and abroad (www.rebeccalevant.com).
A Cantorial soloist, Rebecca has performed in Canada and the U.S.A. Raised in an artistic Judaic milieu in Winnipeg, a distinguished stage career with an early role as âAnneâ in the Canadian premiere of the Diary of Anne Frank, Rebecca has received Canada Council and other theatrical awards. Her research on song repertoire has led to studies with renowned Sephardic specialists Ramon Tasat and Gerard Edery in the U.S.A., at the Jewish Music Institute in England with Shura Lupovsky and Adrienne Cooper, and at the International Banff Centre with jazz diva Sheila Jordan and Richard Armstrong.
Rebecca also works as a consultant in Community Development and Diversity. She leads Healing workshops for people of all faiths and ages using prayer, meditation and music. Her personal mission is to share the beauty of Jewish music with audiences of all cultures, and has been delighted to do so for Hindu, Moslem and Christian audiences.
JEWISH TANGO With melodies borrowed from Spanish gypsies, African slave rhythms, South American Indians and the working class cultures of European immigrants - Italians, Russian Jews, Poles, Germans - the Tango was born in the late 1880âs in Argentina and Uruguay. Carlos Gardel brought these melancholic songs to the ballrooms of Europe where they eventually influenced the music of the Ghettos of Poland and the New York Yiddish Theatre. This album showcases beautiful Tango songs written by Jewish composers with lyrics in both Spanish and Yiddish.
SEPHARDIC MUSIC The Sephardic songs, sung in Ladino (ancient Castilian Spanish) originated primarily from medieval Iberian Jews. When expelled from Spain, they brought their rich musical legacy â its Moorish elements and Spanish romances â to the Balkans, Western Europe and North Africa. The original melodies were often inspired by the new local settlements. This album contains Sephardic song versions from Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece as well as a modern Canadian setting.
INSTRUMENTALISTS
CLARINETIST IAN BURLEIGH is a graduate of the Peopleâs School of Arts in the Czech Republic. He was a member of numerous classical and jazz bands including the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra and the Prague âJazz phonic Fiveâ both of which toured Europe.
