11 MP3 Songs
HIP-HOP/RAP: Alternative Hip Hop, METAL/PUNK: New York Punk
Details:
Hailing from the south Bronx, New York, Randy Mason
is a 22 year old MC with a positive message
characteristic of the early days of hip hop. Drawing
on influences such as Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kweli,
Tupac, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Kaos, The
Beatles, White Stripes, and many others, Randy has
developed a unique lyrical style so rich in metaphor
he is more easily comparable to great American
novelists and poets such as Hemingway, Bradbury,
Burroughs, etc. His style could be characterized in
many different ways, but his unrelenting positivity
shines brightly in today's cultural climate of greed,
violence, and rampant snobbery.
Randy met David Yawman of the garage/punk band On
The Prowl back in 2005 while recording the mix tape
"Under the Influence" in David's studio in Harlem.
They hit it off well, and the mix tape made an
international buzz receiving airplay in New York,
London, Seattle, and Paris. Soon they were working
together on original material, David producing the
punk/ blues/ pop infused instrumentals, and Randy
writing lyrics inspired by the music. The two worked
together for 2 years, along with On The Prowl
bassist/vocalist Amy Farid, and other various artists.
The material was then edited down to an 11 song
album, "Fresh Air." The end result is a collection of
songs very different in instrumentation and
production, somewhat similar to recent releases from
Mos Def and Kaos, and definitely owing to the
diversity of Frank Zappa and the Beatles. The style
ranges from the hard
punk/industrial sledgehammer of "Fastlane", to the
over the top volkswagon commercial pop of "Fresh Air."
In between you can find a whole spectrum of influences
from trip hop, 80's synth-pop, 60's punk rock, house
and soul all tied snugly together into a tight package
unified by Randy's enthusiastic message.
The new On The Prowl live band consists of Randy
Mason on vocals, David Yawman on guitar, Amy Farid on
Bass, Dro on drums, Kim Burgie on keyboards/ trumpet,
Supa DJ King James on turntables, and Arabelis on
backup vocals.
