Details:
Silent Substituteâtheyâre siblings in a band... they are not a sibling band. Silent Substitute is a Christian rock quartet made up of songwriting siblings. They play rock, pop, and worship music, the combination of which keeps audiences interested and involved.
"You were born to do this!" was one young man's reaction after recently seeing the band perform live. It appears to be true, since the Lord was the One to put this band together, longer ago than the members can remember; and He continues to open doors for them.
The band members, oldest to youngest, are: Meghan, keyboardist and guitarist, at the ripe old age of 21; Ryan, age 18, the drummer; Becca, the electric guitarist, whoâs 15 years old; William, the bassist, and youngest of the four, at age 13.
The band's new CD, Lovely Is Not As It Should Be, is based on Philippians 4:8, which says: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableâif anything is excellent or praiseworthyâthink about such things." The album's name illustrates how the world's concept of beauty doesn't measure up to God's standard. Such is the basis of the song "Mind Pollution", which encourages people to not let the world and the sin they see around them to stain their minds. The album was produced by the creative mind of Andi Courneya.
Silent Substitute began writing songs when the youngest member, William, was about two years old. That first song was written on a sticky note. And the title? It was called "Yo". Of course, way back then, the band's name was 3:16âonly the first in a cluster of names that the band has gone through. The band finally decided on "Silent Substitute" in the nick of time to get their T-shirts printed.
Speaking of their name, "Silent Substitute" is derived from Isaiah 53:7: "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open his mouth; He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open his mouth."
Another song on the album, "Fill Me Up", received a Superior rating in songwriting at the Minnesota Fine Arts Festival, with invitation to travel to the national competition.
The band is very active in worship ministry, and likes to include praise and worship time in their concerts. They have led worship, in various forms, for six years.
Another ministry close to the band's heart is adoption, as evident on their album's bonus track, "Child of the King". This song was written after the whole family went to China to adopt a little girl named Stasia. The song is about an orphan who finds comfort in her heavenly Father and in His plan for her life. Another trip to China, nearly two years ago, brought the band a new little brother named Joey. The band firmly believes in James 1:27: "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
"To Walk Humbly" comes from Micah 6:8, showing how God has asked His people to walk humbly with Him, loving mercy. It is a prayer; saying, essentially: "Dear Jesus, help us to walk humbly with You, and please keep us unstained by the world, seeking You, until You come again.â
Yes, indeed, Silent Substitute is a Christian band, a rock band, a worship band, and a band with a calling from God.
Just don't call them a sibling band.
