All Original Songs. A steamy romp in the swamp of Texas and Gulf Coast R&B traditions, featuring some of Austin's most accomplished musicians.
11 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Swamp Blues, ROCK: American Trad Rock
Details:
"Voodoo Dream" is a conjuration of blues, swing, rockabilly, creole, & funk that highlights his songwriting in eleven lyrical vignettes that poke fun at superstitions, addictions, and the wacky behaviors that pass for love.
Spencer's vocal talents are joined on this debut release by an eclectic group of veteran Austin music makers, including John Inmon, George Rarey, Sarah Brown, Rodney Craig, Jim Trimmier, Nick Connolly, & Tonico Vanalli. Their numerous recording credits could stand as a history of the Austin music scene stretching back to the early 70's.
Thomas refers to himself as a blues singer, though his songwriting belies broader influences. Possessing a voice seasoned by twenty years on stage, he loves the classic feel and danceable rhythms of obscure soul and swamp pop songs.
Music guru at The Austin Chronicle, Margaret Moser wrote that he "does his stuff with the kind of Texas panache that should be getting raves from peers and press."
HISTORY -
Spencer came up in the Fab T-bird blues revival of the mid-eighties. His first rocking blues band, The Solid Senders (featuring Keith Ferguson on bass), was a mainstay of Austin's live music scene for a decade. They gained an international cult following after cutting two albums for the Dutch label, Tramp Records.
He then formed The Big Pow Wow, which evolved from a stint as host of a popular weekly blues jam in Austin. The group, whose members went on to play with various touring acts, recorded a self-titled CD which has become something of a collector's item among Austin blues afficionados.
Spencer's most visible gig, however, was with Dallas guitar slinger, Pat Boyack. After singing eight songs on Pat's third release, "Super Blue and Funky" (Bull's Eye Blues - Rounder), the pair performed at major blues venues and festivals across the country with Boyack's band.
Back in Austin, Spencer has stayed on the scene, playing intermittently with his own band and with bassist & showman extraordinaire, Larry Lange.
