Spider and the Fly BIO
Spider and the Fly formed in 2002 and writing for Innocence and the Madness began late that year. The concept originally began as a comic book concept design accompanied by music to fill in the blanks of the story.
It was sometime around April 2004 when Tatianna and I were at a party and from across the room a face I had not seen in 15 years appeared before me. He was hanging out with some friends of ours and it was the face of Doug Gowen. Doug and I began talking and catching up with all that had happened over the course of time. If you donât believe in fate, you would if this happened to you. We exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch. About one month later I was beginning to re-record and structure the new part of the story and music. It was a Saturday morning and I was loading up drum tracks in our studio and Doug called. He then decided to come to our studio. I began telling him about the project and let him listen to some tracks. As the day went on we set up a partial drum set and began playing. It was the most exciting time in my life with regard to music. It was as if we had been playing together our whole lives. After that day Doug was officially part of the band.
We began restructuring the music as I was writing and finishing up volume 1 of the book. We started recording the first production August 2004 and finished by November with Chapters 1 through 10 of Innocence and the Madness. The book was officially released March 24, 2005.
As writing continued for the next eight chapters we decided to bring in KP to play bass so that we could work on our live show, which was quite a process. For those who donât know about the show, as we, the band play the music, the animation and storyline play on a big screen behind us. So, you couldnât be off for more than 1 ½ seconds. In some cases we had to speed up the music and in others we had to slow down. Timing was everything, but all in all we had it polished.
Writing was finally coming to completion for the final remaining chapters. Tatianna and I had made a huge, life-changing decision to move to Austin, Texas for many different reasons, our music being the most important. Once we had moved, the story in rough draft had become complete. It was time to hire all the essential people for the final production. We discovered Tania Walker from Australia, our character illustrator and designer, on iFreelance.com. She had a partner, Amanda Stoner, who did all the color design for the character illustrations. The music was recorded at Sellar Door Studios in the beautiful hill country of Austin and engineered by a very talented Mr. Ben Blank. Recording commenced March 12th through the 16th, 2007. Doug Gowen performed drums, percussion and bass that week and Chris did the first guitar tracks in the same setting in order to get that live feel. The over dubs and vocal tracks along with the sound effects were completed April 28th through the 30th, May 5th and 19th. Mastering was completed at Ben Blank Media May 22. Tatianna and I completed the project structuring in June and the final product was ready for delivery to our fans by July 2007.
Now that the project is complete prepare for the dysfunctional tours!
Best regards,
Chris Wheat
