ROCK: Roots Rock, ELECTRONIC: Folktronic
Details:
From "the Tumbleweed Zine" August 2007
"Since We've Been Apart" is by far Streetchoir's most thought-provoking, soul-searching , musically-electrifying album to date. The music is not unlike their past adventures, with Streetchoir's signature" roots-y" beats and down-home feel laced throughout. However, they've hit a milestone here in their delivery.
Emotionally-driven songs such as "Twisted Around" and "We've Seen Hard Times"give us a glimpse through the darkness into the wake of a new understanding.
Stand out songs like "You Will Not Let Her Down", There's a Road", and "Just a Few Reasons" with lyrics that claim "the president is not the cure/ he can't stop this holy war/ in a world that is out of control", show us that these guys are a thinking man's band. The addition of
bells, horns and harmonica all add to the tone of urgency, and ultimate clarity that this album brings forth.
The very first cut is a song that Mahalia Jackson once sang, taken to a completely new level. It appropriately starts off with a clip of her speaking, slowly building drumbeats and then draws us in as the lead singer's voice softly wonders, "How did I make it over?!" Mid- song it crescendos into a menagerie of beats, more spoken word, U2-esque vocals, and trailing electric guitar that leave the listener wanting to go out and sound their barbaric "yawp" over the rooftops of the world. At last the song slowly brings everything back into perspective and we feel that somehow we WILL make it over.
This is only the first song, and yet it perfectly reflects the thoughtful trail that "Since We've Been Apart" takes us down.
I suggest you join Streetchoir on their newest journey...
