Greetings from Spectre Island! Strangeways is back with their second CD, Lupercalia, recorded over the damp, dark, cold winter of 2007.
1. Some People: Dedicated to Astra Luna and penned by James Petcoff in the bleak winter days of 1984. This is a messege samba reflection on a vacuous evening spent at The Rat Club, listening to Tex and The Horse Heads while downing watered whiskey and flat beer. Check out Jan Wolverton's Lovesque guitar solo. Any similarity in this song to the works of the late, great Arthur Lee/Bryan McLean is purely inspirational.
2. Jupiter: Penned by Jan and our west coast colleague, Milton Randle, Jupiter explores the absurdity of human endevor when confounded by the cosmic humor of infinity as represented by Jupiter, god of mirth and laughter.
3. I Found You: Penned by the band, this slow haunting blues conjures up for some, memories of the original Savoy Brown Band fronted by legendary vocalist, Chris Youldon.
3. But You Didn't: A David Quinn tune nick-named by Jan and James, "Relentless II". Who says wicked old dudes don't listen to Nickel Back, Incubus and ahhhh...oh yeah -- The Doors!
4. LuElla: Written by Cape Cod singer/songwriter, JoAnn Cournoyer, Strangeways gives this version a bounce and roll New Orleans feel. We hope this sparks interest not only for Strangeways but for the much deserved recognition of JoAnn as well.
5. Kayla: Retro-psychadelic-surf angst as penned by David Quinn, overlooking Big Sur at midnight. Check out the rumbling undertow of the Jack Cassidyesque bass and the acid twelve string guitar....Brian Wilson, Dick Dale, Marty Balin, Grace Slick...where are you?
We hope you like what you hear and will check out our previous work, 'Winter'. Please give a listen and let us know what you think.
