BIO

âGuitarist Jeff Torbert, bass player Adam Fine, and drummer Doug Cameron are the architects behind this groove based, improv group. Playing all original compositions, they have crafted a sound that is original, poignant and boundless.â
â Shauntay Grant, CBC Radio 2's 'All the Best'

âNever soporific, Rhizomatics' contemplative opening and closing tones bookend many upbeat, at times joyful, compositions which reward the listener with constantly provocative musical revelations, making Rhizomatics well worth adding to the jazz aficionado's collection.
â Graham Pilsworth, album review, Jazzeast Rising Magazine

Longer music forms tell the story much better than the predictable head-solos-head structure that still often holds jazz improv captive. A mix of improvised and predetermined music, TFC's tunes (mostly penned by guitarist and bandleader Jeff Torbert) unwind like a spontaneous drive through the country â twists and turns, a hill, torrential rain, softly falling leaves, a factory churning out woodchips from trees, paved roads turning to gravel and back again. Ironically, some freely improvised sections have developed such a solid sense of structure within themselves that the band has transcribed the recordings to work into tunes later on. Each composition is a well-tuned engine that opens up space for the individuals to reveal their musical identity within the group, while retaining a strong band style which is varied, challenging and appealing.

Torbert's electric guitar (2006 Galaxie Rising Star Winner at the 2006 Atlantic Jazz Festival) is dark-toned, but full of grace and optimism, and the electric bass (Adam Fine of Gypsophilia and The Fancy Lebanese Country Band) and percussion (Doug Cameron of Aide de Camp and Dr. DFunkt) forms a driving force to be reckoned with.

TFC's debut album Rhizomatics was recorded live November 2006 at The Sonic Temple in Halifax with an audience in close proximity. An intimite 1820's loft with skylights, the November full moon reflecting off of Doug's cymbols and the ancient wooden beams...the music is a result of the energy of the space meeting the people in attendance. Listen closely and enjoy!
