Trio Subtonic is an inventive blend of the old and the new. Pulling from the roots of jazz, classical and traditional brazilian music, Trio Subtonic incorporates original compositions and groove heavy improvisations, laced with elements of hip-hop and samba. Based in Portland, OR, Trio Subtonic evolved from a long time collaboration between keyboardist/composer, Galen Clark and drummer/percussionist, Jesse Brooke. Bill Athens on bass makes up the the third angle of this trio and completes a sound infused with brazilian rhythms and hard hitting funk. In "The Aqueous," Trio Subtonic brings in DJ Papercuts on turntables for several tracks.

Jesse Brooke
Drummer and percussionist, Jesse Brooke, incorporates his experiences with Brazilian, Cuban, classical, North Indian, West African, Indonesian, and jazz into a original blend of style. Originally a babe of the West Coast, he was born in San Diego, relocated and raised in New Jersey, and has been living in Portland for the past six years. He graduated from Lewis and Clark College with a BA in Music and has since taught percussion in the Portland area. Among his teachers are Carl Allen, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Mark Gooden-berger, and Andy Sterling.

Galen Clark
Massachusetts native, Galen Clark, brings a variety influences and experiences to the stage in Trio Subtonic. His influences range from years of studying jazz, Afro Cuban, Brazilian rhythm to classical composition. After receiving a BA with a major in music, composition from Lewis and Clark College and travel extensively in South America, Galen returned to Portland an formed Trio Subtonic with long time friend and collaborator Brooke. Galen has studied with Randy Porter, Forrest Pierce, John Medeski and Jeff Gardner.

Bill Athens
Bassist and composer Bill Athens was born and raised in Appleton, WI. Shortly after his twenty second birthday he moved to Portland, Oregon to continue playing and composing creative music. Bill has played and/or continues to play with many great artists including Mary Kadderly, Darrell Grant, Dan Balmer, Jerry Hahn, Randy Porter, Nancy King, The Dave Mills/Carlton Jackson Big Band, and many others. He also occupied the bass chair on the Queen of the West river boat. He holds a BM from Portland State University where he studied bass with Ken Baldwin, Jazz studies with Darrel Grant and composition with Bryan Johanson. Bills other projects include The Paxselin
