The origins of the band began in 1999 when Mike Spinella and Bill Picchioni, both high school English teachers, started jamming together on the third floor of the high school, the floor on which they taught and still teach. Thus, the name of the band was easily decided. They played acoustic guitar and started playing talent shows, poetry readings, and fund raisers at the school. Over the years they added students and other teachers for different shows, trying to find the sound that truly defined and best fit their style of music.

In 2003, the band known as 3rd Floor was finally complete. Not surprisingly, the make-up of the band consists of all teachers. Fronting the band is Mike "Spin" Spinella on the acoustic and rhythm guitars, keyboards, and lead vocals; Bill "Picch" Picchioni plays acoustic guitar and just recently, electric guitar; Danielle "Chick" Marquardt on drums; Matt Scott, Spinella's cousin, on bass guitar and backing vocals; and Pete Ninivaggi on lead guitar.

After two years of fine tuning and playing the high school shows, the band finally decided to record their own songs. In February of 2006, 3rd Floor recorded their debut album titled "A Room With A View" consisting of nine original tunes. With the expertise of Fred Guarino from Tiki Recording, the album became a culmination of new material and old material written by Spinella back in his college and post-college days and one song co-written by Ninivaggi. They are in the process of recording their sophomore cd "Perspective" with new guitarist Eddie Alahverdian.
