Itâs true. I lost some sleep over this one. I mean, Elton John and Bernie Taupin. That line at the end of the âYour Songâchorus âhow wonderful life is when youâre in the worldâ...the lyric, the music, the orchestration⦠unbelievably masterful and satisfying romantic stuff. It seemed possibly a really bad idea to try to come up with something that would be artful and romantic enough to actually honor, and not insult, the originalâ¦butâ¦We hope youâll agree that the Karma in the studio that week shared among Krystal, Yours truly, and letâs not forget guitar man Jeff, will lead to lots of eager downloads. And weâre pretty sure that Elton and Bernie would at least consider sitting near us at an evening music function.

This is a big-time wedding songâ¦Oh yesâ¦We would advise caution when listening to this one. The first few times you listen to it may cause a dramatically increased, and perhaps, ill-advised closeness to occur between you and anyone youâre dating at the time. Itâs that dead-on wedding-ish. Singer Michael Smith is about as close to a reincarnation of âLutherâ, the King of soul ballads, as a brother can get. Concetta sings âLook at my Wingsâ¦Iâm flyingâ and you say âOh Lordâ¦Iâm marryin' Concetta or somebody â now!... Concettaâs marriedâ¦butâ¦just be careful.

OK so âOnce upon a timeâ is a corny way to begin a song. But ya gotta love âI Need Your Loveâ. Itâs Soul, itâs Popâ¦We give you a happy, make that silly, bouncy- happy, but cool enough groove to counteract any brief appearance of corniness. Our Lady Krystal sings it so nice and pretty sheâll be the first one to make you sure that only love matters in lifeâ¦even if your perfect someone is a few roses short of a dozen.

People, Iâm sure you all remember that the piano is a string instrument. That helps explain why I have always had a love affair with piano and violins. We got some piano and violins kickinâ something slickâ¦something funkyâ¦something definitely jazzy and audaciously original. If you want to hear what piano and violins are really supposed to be doinâ in a big music hall when people gather âround, âKeystrings Kickâ shows youâ¦It will challenge your mind and your speakersâ¦turn it up!

What happens when âFunkâ gets together with a sassy Latin âBosa Nova?â You get a song you gotta like a lot called âFunkalatâ. Amigos check it out. Weâve got funk, for you âBoomersâ. Weâve got some Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass horn goin on (thanks Evan, nice blowinâ), and some cheerful whimsical piano from a hard workinâ - hard playinâ brother (KA). So, here I am playing the piano at a wedding reception for lots of real nice Chinese folks.
It was between songs and Iâm messing around â improvising this classical nocturne that I hadnât felt the inspiration to finishâ¦but it had some soft, swirling, breezy phrases...
I felt some eyes⦠Then, I looked up, and 10 to 15 elegant Chinese elders were gathered around the piano just quietly, peacefully watchingâ¦watching my fingersâ¦watching meâ¦
Lifeâ¦and music were never more mysterious and beautiful than at that moment. I finished Guong Dong the next morning. Thank you my Chinese friends.
Guong Dong is named after an enchanting place in Chinaâ¦a place, I am told, where people are uncommonly rich in spirit and grace.
