After having moved from rural Maryland to NYC at the age of 19, I began truly living my dream. Going to school through the day, waiting tables at night, and trying to find the time and money to record in between. I had my Coyote Ugly moment probably the first night I sat on the bare floor of my unfurnished apartment, eating take-out from the tin triumphantly thinking Iâve done it!
Little did I know that the thrill of the starving artist lifestyle wouldnât last forever. It wasnât long until I began to struggle with a deep depression⦠I cried every day and every night, constantly thinking what is wrong with me? A lot of it had to do with just growing up, and finding myself. Having been raised with very strict Christian values, I began to question not God but the intricacies of faith itself. Surrounded by different lifestyles and cultures than what I had experienced before coming to New York resulted in confusion and uneasiness. It took actual experience to teach me that acceptance means complete and utter lack of judgment, after all, that is not our job. Songs like âProductive Remedyâ and âStolen By Indifference,â became very therapeutic for me. They helped me to sort through some of the problems that I saw happening within myself, and find balance within my soul. I always find it so ironic that only in the face of crisis do we love the way we were meant to love and let go of the things that are so meaningless. I think thatâs what this album was about for me. Finding out who I was becoming in this world, and figuring out how I can help make it a better place. Itâs about bridging gaps, and being able to not take yourself so seriously all of the time. (I think youâll find that âSummerâs Hereâ and âOutside The Fenceâ are good examples of enjoying the lighter side of life.) Itâs about true love, not fantastical expectations. Itâs about finding the strength to always pursue something bigger, without settlement, because nothing is impossible. Itâs about fulfilling the simple gift of giving instead of taking everything our egos tell us we deserve.
Iâve had a very blessed life, full of people who love me. And have experienced struggles that have made me stronger. I hope that my listeners will be inspired to know that I am cheering for them to find their purpose in life, and live everyday as though it was their last.
