Details:
Every new year brings new possibilities, and such is true with 2007 and acoustic alternative/pop trio Jakob Freely. After peacefully splitting with their management of 4 years, the boys decided to go their own route and release the Elliot Ep. Not only a disc to mark their independence, the Elliot Ep also marks a switch in styles for Jakob Freely, from a straight forward pop sound, to a more roots based acoustic alternative genre. The disc possess 5 original tunes that the boys have carefully road tested over the past year and a half. Recording the songs live in Athens, OH based 3 Elliot Studio, the boys performed such songs as Dogfarm, Ava, Clarkâs Predicament, Radio, and Mr. Wizard. Adding varied instrumentation to the mix, local Athens musicians Zeke Hutchision and Todd Sams sat in on Mandolin and Banjo, respectively. Dave talks about the EP: âWe never really sat down and mapped out a plan to switch directions with our songwriting. It just came about when we grew weary of âtryingâ to write a certain
way or in a certain style. When we just sort of let go to see what came out...this was it. Once the foundation was laid, it just became a matter of focusing more on the melody than the rhythmic quality of the song.â Early reviews are coming in for the Elliot Ep and thus far, everything seems positive. Speak Easy Online Magazine gave the album 5 stars and UNSIGNED Music Magazine gave 4 stars and stated that it âpossesses and alternative sound that should gain a large and loyal following.â
Jakob Freely is currently based out of Columbus, OH with most of itâs members living in outlying areas. Drummer/Percussionist Dennis Foreman lives about an hour and a half away in Piketon, OH and guitarist/backing vocalist Bobby Huffman lives an hour away in Chillicothe. The boys write and practice through Mp3s that they email back and forth to each other. They have also found this to be a good way to add members to the band in other cities.
âWhen we recorded these songs, we wanted something different, but we wanted something that we could re-create in a live setting,â says Bobby. âSo we brought Zeke and Todd in on Banjo and Mandolin, and it was so easy because we just emailed them the material and they came in and laid it down.â Dave adds, âNow Iâm obsessed with having people sit in with us at shows. Iâve already
found someone in Dayton, OH to sit in with us on Violin. Plus, a couple of our buddies from another band sit in with us on Bass and electric guitar.â âWe want to crush the threshold of just being an acoustic trio and create an environment where you never know what youâll get at a Jakob Freely show.â
The boys have a 25 city spring tour planned to help promote the new disc with stops scheduled in Nashville, Chicago, Knoxville, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Louisville, to name a few. But Freely never really rests from the road, says Dennis. âThatâs what DIY is all about. If you donât have anyone pushing your album, you have to stay out on the road to meet and connect with people. Itâs all about relationships.â
