HCEâs sound in all truth is indefinable and with an extremely wide range of musical influences (Melvins, Portishead, The Beatles, Pixies), HCE arrived at a sound which is heavy, noisy and experimental, yet catchy and memorable.

ROCK: Grunge, ROCK: Noise

Details:
Echoland, the sophomore release by Winnipeg based HCE. HCE is a trio featuring Matt Laberge (guitar/vocals), Matt Powers âSoursâ(drums/backing vocals) and Roger Arsenault(bass). To slap a genre on the group would be unfair to the band as well as to the listener. HCEâs sound in all truth is indefinable and with an extremely wide range of musical influences (Melvins, Portishead, The Beatles, Pixies), HCE arrived at a sound which is heavy, noisy and experimental, yet catchy and memorable.

Album credits include Production and Engineering by Juno award winner Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, Gwar, Darkest Hour), Mixing by Shaun Thingvold (Fear Factory, Lamb of God, Motley Crue) and Mastering by Greg Reely (Tea Party, I Mother Earth, Coldplay, Skinny Puppy).

âWeâve never concerned ourselves with fitting into a certain genre,â says Matt Laberge, lead singer/guitarist of HCE âIt would kill the spontaneity of the songs if that was our focus.â Echoland certainly does not seem to fall into any conventional genre. The album consists of eerily upbeat tracks like, âThe Hostageâ, âSatireâ and the sickly sweet âBlue Chairsâ. Contrasting these, are dark discordant songs like âSalt Peterâ and âRanaâ The album then draws to a close with the mesmerizing barrage of noise that is âSapsuckerâ.
Each song is loud and intense in its own way yet every track has a hook, whether it comes through in a memorable pattern of pauses between noise, or in joyously happy vocal melodies over enormously distorted guitars. Labergeâs lyrics paint a picture and have an ambiguous dream-like quality, as heard in the horrific lullaby "It Must Be Dawn".

âHard hitting, cut throat, emotive, heavy and experimental.â - Winnipeg Sun

"Loud. Fast. Angry. The New material is going a long way to fulfilling the band's promise of being one of the cities most viscerally satisfying outfit." - Uptown Magazine

âDeliciously loud.â
- Winnipeg Free Press
