Classic rock that lovers of '70's-style Brit-rock will like.
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: 70's Rock, ROCK: Album Rock
Details:
The Linear Brothers band's sound derives from '60's and early '70's roots. That's when we all started playing. So we heard mostly AM radio rock. Especially in the mid-60's, one would hear about equal amounts of white boy rock and soul/R&B. We loved the very steady loping grooves in Memphis' music. We admired the similar but slicker grooves in Detroit's music.
We did not play R&B songs in our early gigs as the Iron Cross. We played Brit rock stuff and West Coast stuff when we played covers. Iron Cross had a "wall of sound" like Blue Cheer, The Who or Vanilla Fudge, but also some swing. Hercules Armistice ("H.A." or "HaHa" to his friends) in his youth tried to emulate the astounding Keith Moon. Nobody could really play just like Keith Moon (nobody has ever had wrists like his), but HaHa took to heart Moon's approach of beginning rolls, flourishes and accents ON the beat, which gave him a "jump" on the bars to follow. This kind of attack gives swing, no matter how heavy the sound is otherwise.
HaHa can bust off some Who-like drumming (Lunatics' Holiday), and he can nail it down like Al Jackson Jr. (One Perfect Day). He can do both in the same song (I've Never Seen a Miracle).
Marrying up to this heavy-footed yet swinging drumming style is Ultra's deep-fried Brit bass. Ultra mainly uses a 1967-vintage Gibson SG Bass. With some Roto-Sounds on it, Ultra's bass locks into the groove with HaHa, but is more aggressive and edgy. He's often a second rhythm guitar while being the bass.
HaHa and Ultra put a relentless stamp on the Linear Brothers' music.
Frank and Larry and Fenton weave in and out of the pillars of each song. You will seldom hear better guitar-layering than Frank and Larry achieve.
