There is a new band in the neighborhood intent on resurrecting the blues. From old nuggets such as âGood Morning Little School Girlâ and â44 Bluesâ to their Zappaesk rendition of âLa Grange meets Willie the Pimpâ Blue Mozart twists and turns the blues into new shapes. The band formed one year ago is starting to make a mark in clubs formally playing metal, folk rock and traditional blues.
Mozart Rottweiler the bands leader says âI was trying to find a way of playing classic blues that would transcend the genera, and with this bunch of musicians I think I have found the right formula. Using musicians who are veterans of different areas of music brings a new color to the blues. I like to think of it as the âBlack and Bluesâ. Sometimes I feel more like a ring master then the leader.â
The three guitarists Artie (Artful Dodger) Sccocozza, John (the Dragon) Drake and Mozart Rottweiler can be found playing at the Katonah bar and grill, Victors, Lazy boy Lounge, and at the Heights Bistro jams. Sometimes two bars in a night. âanything to keep up our edge, this is were we try out new materialâ says John and Artieâ
Artie has been a metal and hard rock guitarist for five years in Tungstan12, and Aloid. Tungstin12 produced a cd that will be released on âBones donât float Recordsâ within the next few months. Artie gives the group that hard speedy edge as only a crunchy metal guitarist can.
John began playing guitar as a teenager and has been playing electric and acoustic music for about 20 years with a few dormant periods in between. The past two years, however, have been a time of rediscovery and constant playing, influenced by such diverse elements as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, Howlinâ Wolf, and Django Reinhardt.
Mozart has played in âYa Muddas Night Mareâ a 50âs do wop group, Mirkwood a folk rock band and his own âMozart Rottweiler with Sinister Undertonesâ a gothic Rhythm and blues band that produced 3 cds. âIâve played in Topless bars, cat houses and dives you wouldnât sit down in without a can of Lysolâ says Mozart. Mozart says âI try to keep things fluid, if you hear the song done the same way twice, I am not doing my job. All the jamming with different people helps. None of us is classically trained but we are definitely housebrokenâ
Blue Mozart is fluid moving with sedge ways of different styles such as âSuzy Q does Purple Hazeâ and âKnocken on Heavens door into Little Richards âI hear you Knockerâ The new addition to the group Seth Pacini has definitely helped with the sound and our chameleon like changes. Seth comes from the world of electronic music. Playing Funk, world and Jazz with the likes of Chillbone, P-funk, Jiggle the Handle, and lettuce. He also was in the band Ruby Hogg. African rhythms are his specialty.
Blue Mozart will be releasing there live album âUndercover of the Bluesâ within the next few months.
