The Title, âTREADâ
Working on a new record for a year and a half gives you some time to change your mind. After changing my mind a few times concerning the title for this new record. I finally landed on a really simple but meaningful one. Itâs simply called âTREAD!â It was inspired by some very wonderful and powerful words of Jesus in Luke 10:19 and also from some that David wrote in Psalm 91. Itâs all about getting back up, walking on, progressing, overcoming, and conquering in spite of the fact that we live in a very volatile, nasty, negative and increasingly dangerous world!

Why Did I do it Again?
I recorded a CD several years ago titled Grace Come Down. It was good. I didnât try very hard to market it or get it out there. I was just glad to finally get some of my songs off of scrap pieces of paper and onto disk. I felt like if nobody bought it but family and friends I still just had to do it! I ended up selling several hundred copies without really trying. I was surprised in a good sort of way! I started being asked to play different places, which was good. Then, I got really up to my neck and sometimes over my head with other responsibilities. I put the music, which is a big part of me, on the back burner. Not a good thing.
In the Spring of 2005 I began to sense a stirring in my heart that I was supposed to make a new record! I went on a mission trip to Antigua later that summer, and while there I thought much about this new art I wanted to do. When I got back in the states, I was surprised to find a voicemail from a producer/engineer. I was surprised because to my recollection this guy had never called me before. He left me a message saying that if I was ready to do an album, he was ready to work with me. I took that as some timely confirmation that I was on track with this new pursuit! Recording began the first weekend in November and I thought the project would be ready for distribution and purchase by late summer 2006. Didnât happen that way and now Iâm glad it didnât.
Spiritually, I knew the new record would be powerful; honestly reflecting what God has been teaching me. And on the musical level it would reflect the many great bands that have influenced me over the years. It would be an album of worship, struggle, honesty, joy, victory, and hopeâ¦while being sonically powerful and full of energy. In other words, it would simultaneously bless your heart and also make you want to put it in your Ipod for a great jogging session!
The Lord graciously paved the way for the recording of this new album over the past year and a half. I think its good and has some God-given favor bestowed upon it. Trust me; you will want this one in your CD collection!
Anyway, the new album is called simply, TREAD. It is due to be released in July 2007 and will be available here on my website, on Itunes, and several other internet and retail outlets.
The Music style of the New CD
This record is a powerful mixture of gravel, groan, guts and glory! My producer friend says it is adult alternative with a harder edge. I personally think it has a lot of classic rock vibe, but with Hope and Integrity! âIs that possible?â you ask. I hope you'll get it and listen for yourself! I intentionally wanted the music to unashamedly reflect the great bands that have influenced me over the years, and not just sound like a copy of the latest stuff on contemporary Christian radio. Donât get me wrong, there is some good stuff on CCM radio! And Iâm thankful for the groups that are big right now, but I didnât want to try to be another Mercy Me or Casting Crowns or Toby Mac. They are better at what they do than I could ever be! But even though I didnât want to sound like those guys, Iâm not claiming TREAD is musically original either. As far as originality goes I donât have anything original but sin! I believe there have been great bands that were gifted by God to do what they do, even though maybe they didnât realize it or give God the glory they should have for their gifts and musical chemistry. Some of these bands have had such an impact on me musically since I was a little boy. I canât be timid about showing it; and so youâll hear the vibes and influence of bands like U2, Led Zep, the Stones, Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac, and the Eagles! Yet, this thing has its own freshness. With lots of energy, passion, dynamics, and raspy guitar work, I wanted it to come across like a guy with a heart on fire leading a great garage band. Though it really rocks in places, itâs not all hard rock. It has a real diversity of styles from hard rocking multi-layered tracks on some songs to one that has nothing but an acoustic guitar and two voices. One song may have 80 tracks, and one may have no more than 3. Now that is really diverse!
Guitarsâ¦Further Proof that God Loves Us!
I wanted this to be a guitar album. Why? Cuz I love them very much! Here are the ones we used: I have a 10 year old Taylor Acoustic which sounds good which was used. âThe Electric Salmonâ is my orange/pink Fender Strat with some great tone. Then there is the âGreat Pumpkinâ which is my beautiful orange wood grain Yamaha hollow body electric AES 1500 with a Bigsby tremolo. By the way, I was privileged not only to use my 3 guitars on this album but some really great guitars like Tommy Collierâs bad-to-the-bone 1968 custom black Gibson Les Paul, a vintage blond 1952 Telecaster, and a 1964 hollow body Gretsch. Michael Grahamâs 12 string electric Danelectro, a Danelectro baritone, a new Gretsch Electromatic, and a Brazilian rose wood Taylor Acoustic. Weylon Michaelâs ivory Richie Sambora Strat, and Jeff Spencerâs Ernie Ball John Petrucci Music Man. Tone galore baby!
Musicians
There are some very dynamic homegrown musicians lending their talent to this project. They are definitely great musicians in anybodyâs book, but what I really like about them is that they are level headed, hard working, humble guys who love Jesus, their families, their churches, and their country! That means something to me even when it comes to laying down some tracks in a studio. There are also some wonderful ladies who have helped a lot with this project by giving their input, time, and vocal talent. All these are listed below:
Paul Stupka -Guitars and Vocals
Richard Dabbs -Bass
Tommy Collier -Guitars
Michael Graham -Keyboards, Bass, Guitars
Weylon Michael -Guitars
April Miller -Vocals
Rocha Richardson -Vocals
Jason Palmer -Drums
Jeff Spencer -Guitars
Paul Turner -Guitars
Grey Zachary -Vocals
Shea Stupka -Vocals
Chuck McArthur -Vocals
Paul Turner -Guitars on KTS original
Ricky Burkehead -percussion on KTS original

10 GOOD REASONS
to have PAUL STUPKA play your
next concert, event, festival, etcâ¦
1. I was about to die of anorexia, loneliness, and most of all a spiritual deathâ¦suicide appeared in my thoughtsâ¦I almost didnât come, expecting the usual punk Christian band, rowdy kids, and no feeling whatsoever of Godâs presence. Instead, you confirmed for the first time, that if you are saved, you belong to God forever. Thank you so much for the peace and hope your ministry has brought, and the many of our church that have been supernaturally changed by the Lord!
A Teenager from Laurel, Ms.
2. Without even any conscious effort on your part you did so much for my adolescent, angry, southern, bored, really misfit ass. I don't think I could express enough respect and appreciationâ¦It's too bad that you are such a humble man... because your crown is going to be huge.... A big head would serve you well
Jaymz St.James
The "Big Rock Show"
3. You lit the light in my life for God!
A Teenager from Germany
4. I was so impressed with how you presented Christ though your musicâ¦Christ was clearly seen!

Cindy Still, Single Adult Consultant, Missouri Baptist Convention
6. His experience as a youth pastor has given him the kind of heart that not all Christian musicians can possess; and these songs have the insight and relevance that can minister to anyone.
Jody Davis, Former Guitarist for the Newsboys, Nashville, TN.
7. His dedication and spirit are very unique, and his songs are soul piercing.
Glen Shows, Family Ministry Director, Mississippi Baptist Convention, Jackson, MS.
8. He portrays awesome Christian character and the love of Christâ¦
High School Student from Tupelo, MS.
9. I would like you to know that you are one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. You make everyone believe that no matter who they are, or where they are from, everyone has an equal chance to do the very best job. Once again, thank you so much!
A Teenager
