Trumpeter/composer Richard Boulger was born in North Adams, Massachusetts. He was introduced to the trumpet by his father who was his first teacher and mentor. From the very beginning Richard learned that music is a vehicle to express ones heart and spirit. âRichard Boulger is a trumpet player with a big fat sound, great chops, and most importantly lots of soul.â- Randy Brecker
At 18 he moved to Hartford, CT where he enrolled at the Hartt School of music and studied with alto saxophonist Jackie Mclean. Richard later co-wrote/produced McLeanâs Daily warm-up exercises for saxophone (Hal Leonard publishing, 1995). He would later contribute his transcription and analysis of McLeanâs solo on âDigâ to Downbeat Magazine (October 95).

Richard continued his education earning a masters degree from Rutgers University in 1997. He has since continued his search for knowledge studying with jazz icons including trumpeters Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd, Bobby Shew, pianists Jacki Byard, Walter Bishop Jr, Richie Beirach, saxophonist George Coleman, and Dave Liebman. Boulger has been equally committed to his development as a composer studying with contemporary composers Roger Kiraly and Ludmila Ulehla.

Richard has been a featured soloist with, amongst others, The Duke Ellington orchestra, Illinois Jacquetâs Big Band and Jacki Byardâs Apollo Stompers. In 1999 at the advice of Donald Byrd, Richard founded b-1 Music and went on to record âThe Callingâ his debut album as a leader. He received much praise from some of the jazz worlds most respected artists.

Since 2001 he has been a member of Greg Allman and Friends touring extensively throughout America. At the request of Greg, Richard recruited a three-piece horn section, which in addition to Boulger on trumpet most recently recorded a live DVD (March 2003) with The Allman Brothers Band at New York Cityâs Beacon Theatre. He has also been a featured soloist with drummer extraordinaire, Victor Jones and his band Cultureversey appearing at several clubs, concerts and festivals all over New York City and most recently returning from an extensive tour throughout South Korea (May 2004)

Richard also is committed to being an active clinician/educator dedicated to working with children throughout the New York City schools and beyond.
