Background
I started singing at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, in Grand Rapids, MI. I did what most kids raised in the church did; sang in every choir, ushered, and went on every Cedar Point trip that was offered! My brother Charles and I would get the tape recorder out, put it on the floor, get down on our knees over it and sing away! We had many original collaborations that we "made up". I played clarinet through middle and high school but it was singing in the "Varsity Voices" under the direction of Mark Webb at East Kentwood High School, that I found my passion. WOW! My best friend, Doris (Hudson) Bumpus, and I formed a gospel singing chorale "Ebony". She was a preachers daughter and boy could she sing! To this day she can do somethin' to a note that's just not of this world.

Early in our dating relationship, my husband encouraged me to sing. Sometimes he even threatened me. Yes, I still married him in 1994. We moved a few times and I managed to hide my passion for singing from every church we joined. Even friends and family that knew I sang, would question why I wasn't doing more and for a brief moment I would say to myself "I want to so badly but...(insert negativity). I have professionally modeled and appeared in a few television shows and commercials. My true passion however is singing! I currently sing with the Inspirational Choir and Praise Team at New Hope Baptist Church in Wayne, MI, where the Rev. Virgil Humes is Pastor.

Why Now?
In 2002, I joined Premier Designs High Fashion Jewelry as an Independent Distributor. By just doing homeshows and offering the opportunity to others, within a year I'd reached Leadership status. Soon I was qualified to earn and attend an 8 Day Mexican Riviera Cruise. It was there that I won the "Cruise Ship Idol" contest singing "RESPECT"! It was exciting for me because I'd faced the giant and won, but for my encore, I sang "Amazing Grace". I was nervous and the doubts started to creep in and sure enough, before the second verse, I FORGOT THE WORDS! I've been singing this song since BIRTH, so I know it was just the enemy! Thank God that my Premier family was there for me, but that was just the beginning. My first "gig" was the July 2005 Premier Designs National Rally in Dallas, TX. Since I'd started with Premier I wanted to be a "Premier Singer"! They are an amazing group of performers that sing and dance their way through Rally, and they are ALL JEWELERS! No need to get outside talent!!! We've got the BEST!! I was going to sing "Respect" and I would get to be on stage with them. What an honor! Well, I donned my beehive wig, metallic lipstick and feather boa, and I did my thing! It was a riot and I will never forget it.

In September of 2005, I was asked to do a "couple" of songs for an area roundup in Atlanta, Georgia hosted by Gayle Foster. Well, a couple to most people is "two" but now that I know Gayle, that means "however many I need you to do". Which turned out to be five! I almost threw up! I didn't know what to sing, how I was going to memorize the songs and if these people would accept me! But it seemed like everywhere I sang, people would ask me if I had a CD that they could purchase. During the rehearsal at the church where the training was to be held, the janitor came to me and asked where he could buy my CD and if I was famous? I just said, "no CD, but my babies think I'm AWESOME"! To this day, I think of him. Another jeweler that was in attendance pulled me aside and said that she saw me singing and bringing the message of Christ to thousands upon thousands. I just stood there thinking "me Lord"? So, after a few appearances and my Premier family telling us that they were touched by my songs, my husband and I prayed on it. We figured if it was meant to be God would make a way.

Well, this year it happened! Neither of us knew who, what, how, when, etc... we just trusted. The company that I used for my performance tracks, Daywind Music, is located in Hendersonville, TN. I called them to see if they could direct me to someone. Of course they could! You see, they have a recording studio there.The recording studio just "HAPPENED" to be 15 minutes from Opryland, where we'd be going in April with our Premier family. It also just "HAPPENED" that the studio was available on the ONE DAY that I was able to record. Oh, they also just "HAPPENED" to have a Dove Award Nominated Writer & Producer, Marty Funderburk, available. Everything just fell into place and I say "HAPPENED" because nothing is by chance! It was all God! One thing after another just fell in place and here we are!

I thought I was going to be known as the "R-ES-P-E-C-T" girl, but God has opened many doors through this company. One of the things that I'd always wanted to do but didn't dare dream of, was sing professionally and record a CD. It didn't matter if I went Platinum, Gold, or Nickel, just knowing that I could "face the giant" would be enough. I now see that "I advance in God's potential, not limited by my own". What a wonderful thought! What's amazing now is that I LOVE singing for a large crowd of 10,000 just as much as I love singing to the Lord when I'm all alone. I never even dreamed that someone would hear ME sing and desire to be closer to the Lord, or want to get to know Him. I have been so blessed by those around me that truly believe I have something to offer.

What's Next?
Only God truly knows. I am blessed with a great marriage! I also love to stay at home and raise my children while working my Premier jewelry business. I want to continue to serve others and see where this project and journey takes us. Nothing is certain so we are standing on God's promises for our lives. We would love to do another project, but I may be a bit short on time? Between church obligations, school events, date nights with Jayson, and jewelry shows, I can't comb my hair. Let's see what God has for me.

More than anything, I want people to hear my music and have hope for their future. Hope for their circumstances. Hope for their children. Hope for their lives. If they can hear that in my music, I'm happy!


Shaylett and her family reside in Michigan. She and her husband Jayson have two beautiful daughters, Janay and Morgan.
