NEW AGE: New Age, FOLK: Urban Folk
Details:
The Shivers are a five-piece band based in New York City but with members living as far away as Melbourne, Australia. The backgrounds of the band members are as diverse as their hometowns, featuring learned, working jazz musicians, a former Sydney Symphony member and classically trained cellist, a bass player who grew up playing in punk rock bands and a singer/guitar player who grew up with a eclectic musical background from rock nâ roll to rap. The band sees their diverse background as a major strength. They had been playing live in New York City for several years in various incarnations prior to recently gelling into a solid band of committed players. The band was originally formed in 2001 in Brooklynâs Bushwick neighborhood by Keith Zarriello. Carrying on by himself and sometimes supported by a rotating cast of supporting musicians, Zarriello went on to record the Shiversâ first album, the self-released Charades, in 2004. Disgusted with the pretentiousness and hype of the Brooklyn music scene, Zarriello retired from the music business and went into exile after recording Charades. Initially moving to Montreal, Zarriello soon left the city to work on a farm in rural Quebec for several months. Returning to Montreal, he worked various odd jobs, including as a street mime, eventually beginning to play music again. Zarriello subsequently returned to New York with a renewed appreciation of music and the City. He became known for a wide variety of musical and artistic experimentation, incorporating everything from stand-up comedy to hip-hop into his live performances. He has also become widely known for his outspoken political views, which he has occasionally expressed during live performances, such as by performing from a wheelchair to raise awareness of the Anti-sexual/Anti-childbirth Movement, which advocates an end to human procreation, believing the act of bringing children into the world to be criminal in light of the crippling impact of modern society on the individual. The current Shivers line-up began taking shape when Ben Jones, a DJ at Fordham Universityâs WFUV and a musician, found a copy of Charades in the trash and contacted Zarriello. The Shivers are: Zarriello (guitar, vocals), Joanne Schornikow (piano, vocals), Will Martina (cello), Jones (bass, vocals) and Evan Pazner (drums). The band have bonded during a recent stint of gigs New York and a recent trip to the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. They are set to release their new album, Phone Calls, on Outer Borough Records this Spring and intend to tour extensively in support of it. The Shivers affiliation with Outer Borough Records came to fruition when Zarriello took a chance by returning a call from Outer Boroughâs President, Sheldon Roberts, who he had long suspected of being an undercover narcotics officer and/or drug dealer based on the foreboding messages that Roberts had been leaving on his answering machine for the past several years.
