People, like music, can be a blend of many distinctive qualities. Raised in a multi-cultural Toronto suburb, Stephen Gilmore was exposed to many races, creeds, ideas and ideals. As a person this helped define his openness, understanding and compassion. As an artist this helped define his creative diversity. Drawing from his foundation in classical piano, jazz upright bass, and producing R&B /pop/ hiphop demos, Stephen has developed his own distinct smooth R&B /Pop/ Adult Contemporary sound.

From and early age, Stephen studied classical music at Torontoâs Royal Conservatory. In high school (school for the arts) he switched to the double bass where he began his rewarding affair with jazz. Being the youngest of three children, Stephen grew up listening to and falling in love with his brothersâ Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Earth Wind and Fire records. The merging influences of Classical, Jazz, disco and old school funk, greatly shaped Stephenâs development as a songwriter and musician.


Stephen has toured as a keyboardist and musical director for a Soca/Reggae bands, worked as a piano and bass teacher, recorded countless demos for local R&B artists (Shoalin, Kadence) , written and recorded music for feature film (Night Friend) , as well as played countless jazz gigs as a bassist. But at this juncture in his music career he has turned his focus towards creating his own voice.


By writing, arranging, producing, performing all instruments, and vocals, Stephen Gilmore has been able to confidently project and protect his musical style. Bass lines, role over discoâsoul-pop rhythms, and silky laid back piano stylings, while lyrics about everyday stories, truths, and emotions are sung with passion and honesty. The result is music that is more melodic and mainstream than neo-soul, more aggressive than adult contemporary, and more âgrown-upâ than most pop. Honest insightful lyrics float over mid-tempo grooves that range from the romantic, to dance, to smooth jazz. The combination is a creative blend of influences that Stephen Gilmore can truly call his own.
