âIt was an accident, I swear.â You ask Nimh, the frontman and vocalist for The Key to Our Secret, how they formed, and thatâs what heâll tell you. âI just wanted a song to put on a compilation.â Life is never that simple though, and after having recorded the song, he and Graham, their guitarist, got the bug, and there was nothing they could do about it.
From that one recorded song, Graham and Nimh decided to form a band. They would play some shows during the summer, do some recording, then Nimh would take the recordings back with him to the city to form a band around the music he had co-written. But first, they needed a band to play with for the show.
Throughout his musical travels, Graham jammed several times with Clark, and enjoyed working with him in the past. When a drummer was needed, Graham turned Clark to play with them for the summer. So on board he came, and it was this three-piece that played their first show.
But they were missing something. Like low-end. And since they had at least one more gig lined up already, they needed a bassist. And so David joined the band, recruited by being Nimhâs younger brother. Since then, though, heâs become much more than that, becoming world-renowned (in our little world) for his stage antics.
Nimh loved the chemistry so much, he decided not to try an reproduce it with another group. Instead, he said, âFuck it, letâs keep playing together.â And heâs damn fucking glad he did.
And so, The Key to Our Secret was formed.
What is their secret you say? That is buried deep within their creations. And theyâll never tell. You can ask, badger, plead, beg, and bribe, but they wonât tell you. Thatâs for you to try and find on your own. What they can tell you is this:
âWe are not copy-cats, but we arenât original. We are the sum of our influences, ranging from Rage Against the Machine, Tool, dredg, and Mute Math, to Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, El-P, and The Fugees, and everything in between. We are a progressive, experimental rock group, but we have our own hip-hop flavor in that context, to bring you us. We are as yet undecided about what genre we are, but you can call us a Hip-Hop Jam Band for now. Really, you can call us whatever you want, because the music will still be the same regardless of its title.â
Review of our Rutger's RUMG show:
"Key to Our Secret blew............. everyone away. They had the biggest draw, got the loudest applause, and had the absolute best stage show of the night. The frontman and the bassist were incredibly fun to watch. It was an absolute joy seeing their bassist going nuts, really getting into it, jumping around, spinning his bass, leaping into the crowd, all that. He was incredibly skilled at his instrument too. Damn good player. I always like it when bassists are also rock stars, because a bassist doesn't always have to hide in the shadows on stage. This is one bassist who's probably crazier on stage than I am. Musically, this rap/rock band was very dynamic and each song was always interesting to the audience. " - Neal
