"A great musician."
âA guitarist of truly outstanding ability...breathtaking⦠without a doubt a distinguished new talent.â
âa mature and commanding soloistâ¦compellingâ
Classical Guitar Magazine UK
At age five his parents noticed Alan plucking tunes on his motherâs guitar. His uncle, George Ward (an established classical guitar teacher) encouraged Alanâs parents to enrol him in formal tuition and he gave his first public performance at the age of seven with his official debut taking place at the age of fifteen.
Hailing from Mahogany Creek, Western Australia, Alan is widely regarded by his contemporaries as one of Australiaâs premier guitarists and is fast establishing a reputation as one of the guitar worldâs brightest talents. Composers such as Irelandâs Frank Lyons and Australian Richard Charlton (who penned the two world premieres on this recording) have written new works with Alanâs virtuosic performance in mind.
Performing extensively throughout Europe he has given concerts in Paris, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Ireland, Italy and Portugal including a stunning London debut at St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square.
Numerous radio and TV appearances both in Australia and overseas include live recordings and broadcasts for ABC FM and recordings for BBC Radio 3, the UKâs premiere classical music station. His 2003 recording of Peter Scullthorpeâs âNourlangieâ, with the Ulster Orchestra, is repeatedly showcased on BBC radio 3.
Alan has been an invited guest at numerous of festivals including the Musicora Festival (Paris) the Sonorities Contemporary Music Festival (Northern Ireland) The Darwin International Guitar Festival and The Derry Guitar Festival. An enthusiastic pedagogue, he has presented master-classes, workshops and acted as artist-in-residence at universities in Australia and Europe.
An ardent believer in the need for classical music to be artistic and accessible Alan also possesses a fervour for discovering new music and in particular drawing on the abundant myriad of styles which are showcased by the worldâs most popular instrument⦠the guitar.
