"GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART I GOTTA ROLL"
a tribute to

THE SPANIELS VERY OWN

James âPookieâ Hudson & Gerald âBounceâ Gregory

Doo-wop, R&B, Dance, Classic music lovers, DJs, Steppers, Skaters, Ballroom Dancers, Beat lovers worldwide âyour collection of classics is incomplete! Whatâs missing? The sensational new school version of the 1950s Spaniels hit âGoodnight Sweetheart,â originally composed by the late Spaniels great James âPookieâ Hudson. Now produced by recording artist David Josias, this latest rendition of âGoodnight Sweetheartâ lead by David is a must-have tribute to two of the late all-time great singers and members of The Spaniels: James âPookieâ Hudson (June11, 1934 â January 16, 2007) and Gerald âBounceâ Gregory (June 10, 1934 â February 12, 1999).

In this latest accolade of the legendary group, David Josias (the third son of The Spaniels singer Donald Porter) has spearheaded a tribute to the singers by bringing a new sound to a blast from the past in this multi single cd entitled âGoodnight Sweetheart I gotta roll.â David Josias is best known for wooing the ladies with his sexy vocals in hits like âMind Blowinâ, âIn My Lifeâ, and âI Ainât Gone Trippâ from his independently released cds "In My Life", "Ghetto love" and "Special Time". âMind Blowinâ released on an indie label based in Chicago in 1995 hit #1 most requested and favorite at radio stations across the country and sold over 200,000 copies. A Billboard top 100 single, followed by a BET & Music Box most requested video... R&R magazine's favorable review called him "the fresh new voice in R&B".

THE SPANIELS

Gary, IN. All of the members of The Spaniels grew up in Gary, Indiana, and graduated from Garyâs Roosevelt High School. The Spaniels began recording in the 1950s and launched the Vee-Jay Record Label to success when the group became the labelâs first promoted act. Vee-Jay Records was owned by WWCA radio station D.J. Vee-Vivian Carter and businessman Jay-Jimmy Bracken of Chicago, Illinois. The Spaniels recorded several hits, including âBells Ring Out,â âLetâs Make Up,â âPainted Pictures,â and âDo You Really.â They toured with the legendary Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Drifters, Sam Cooke, and Chuck Berry.

Premier first leader and composer James âPookieâ Hudson, most famous for his composition âGoodnight Sweetheart,â was born on June11, 1934. Like most of the members in The Spaniels, he grew up in Gary, Indiana, and attended Roosevelt High School. He honed his singing skills in the doo-wop era and went on to gain recognition in the 1950s for his Billboard Chart-topping composition âBaby Itâs You" which launched the Vee-Jay label. âPookie, as he was affectionately called, had a profound influence on various recording artistâs styles, including Aaron Nevels and Johnny Mathis, among many others. Equally premier bass singer Gerald âBounceâ Gregory was born on June 10, 1934. He influenced many bass singers with his resonant style.

The original members of The Spaniels also included Ernest Warren, Opal Courtney, and Willie C. Jackson who left the group along with Pookie. Gerald then recruited JamesâDimplesâ Cochranâa.k.a. âDimpâ, Carl Rainge, and Donald âDuckâ Porter. Pookie later returned to the group, bringing new compositions including âHe Gave Me Peace of Mind,â which The Spaniels recorded with âPlease Donât Teaseâ on the flip side, composed by Otis Blackwell (famous for Elvis Presleyâs âAll Shook Upâ).

The 1954 hit âGoodnight Sweetheartâ was âcoveredâ by The McGuire Sisters, resulting in the song being aired on major stations and becoming a nationwide hit. This practice of covering Black artists was common in the U.S. and in Europe. Artists such as Pat Boone, Elvis Presley and many others performed songs originally recorded by Black artists. In some cases, many artists were never recognized or compensated for their own songs. When the Spaniels toured the country and sang Goodnight Sweetheart, audiences actually believed The Spaniels were singing the McGuire Sisterâs song, but it was really the other way around. However, The Spaniels have been recognized for their achievements in more recent years.

During a symposium at the National Museum of American History Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Dr. Portia K. Maultsy of Indiana University-Bloomington introduced The Spaniels as the pioneers of American âpopularâ music in February 1986 in honor of Black History Month. In 1991, famed country and western singer Bonnie Raitt presented the R&B Foundation Pioneer Award to The Spaniels. In 2005, The Spaniels were inducted into the Doo-Wop Hall of Fame of America at Bostonâs Symphony Hall, Boston, MA.
