Japhlet Bire Attias grew up in New York State and in Guanajuato, central Mexico. He started playing the guitar at the age of 13. At age 22, Japhlet discovered the Stick and found in it the medium he had been looking for to express his musical vision. In the fall of 2005 Japhlet co-founded the Pan-Metropolitan Trio, a small jazz group made up of Stefan Kac on the Tuba, and Owen Weaver on Drums and Percussion. The stick duo Relative Encryption has been featured at underground clubs in Minneapolis, as well as at art shows and cafes. They record mostly improvised music, and have played with known Minneapolis drummer Kevin Washington. Introduction, the CD shown here, is Japhlet's first release. It features his compositions and extensive use of electronic percussion mixed with soft synths, and the beautiful sound of the Chapman Stick. 2 of the songs, El Laberinto, and La Oruga, are based on 2 paintings by renown Mexican artist Enrique Alcaraz (www.enriquealcaraz.com). The paintings can be view on Japhlet's site, and ideally should be viewed while listening to the music. Tracks 4 and 5 feature Japhlet's computer-based explorations, while 6 and 7 feature Japhlet's signature solo Stick. A small demo video can be viewed on YouTube, Myspace or his site.
