SPIRIT CALL, Jeff Gardnerâs first solo piano album, was recorded
in Paris at Studio Acousti by the legendary sound engineer Alain Clouzeau.
The material ranges from bossa to bebop, modal jazz, flamenco, modern classical, and other styles that Jeff has distilled in his original compositions. Two bonus tracks, recorded in concert at Maison de la Radio France in Paris, include a beautiful ballad, Joanne, by the late great Brazilian saxophonist-composer Victor Assis Brasil and a longer live version of the title track, with an intro verging on classical contemporary music.


ABOUT JEFF GARDNER

Jeff Gardner was born in New York. After classical piano lessons with Ruth Schontal and Ivan Tcherepnin he studied jazz with Jaki Byard, Charles Banacos, and John Lewis, and harmony with Nadia Boulanger. He has performed with such musicians as Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Eddie Harris, Steve Lacy, Freddie Hubbard, Bob Sheppard, Paulo Moura, Dori Caymmi, and the piano quartet with Jaki Byard, Martial Solal, and Paul Bley. His recordings include âContinuumâ, with Eddie Gomez and Billy Hart, âAlchemyâ, with Gary Peacock, âSecond Homeâ, with Rick Margitza, âSky Danceâ (recorded in Rio de Janeiro) with Gilberto Gil, and âNoches Habanerasâ, recorded in Havana, Cuba, with Anga, Maraca, Julio Barreto, Diego Valdez, and Felipe Cabrera. Jeffâs CD, âThe Music of Chanceâ is a collection of music inspired by the writings of Paul Auster and features Rick Margitza, Ingrid Jensen, and Drew Gress. Other recent recordings include âStreet Angelsâ, also recorded in Rio, âGraceâ with David Friesen, and âAbraçosâ, with Carlos Balla and Alberto Continentino. His newest release, "Breath" (Terramar) features Drew Gress and Anthony Pinciotti. Jeff is a versatile musician, equally at home with jazz, new music (his duo with Andrew Schloss on radio drum), and Brazilian sounds. He recently wrote and performed his first piano concerto in Sao Caetano do Sul (Brasil). Active in jazz education, Jeff has given workshops in many different countries and is the author of JAZZ PIANO: CREATIVE CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES, SENTIMENTO BRASILEIRO, and JEFF GARDNERâS BLUES BOOK , EASY JAZZ PRELUDES (all published by Editions H.
