Eclectic Tribal Funk
14 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Jam-band, WORLD: World Beat
Details:
Mamaguroove has been playing its highly infectious, homegrown, eclectic brand of revolutionary and emotional music for the past eight years. Grown from the roots of back-to-the- land-life in the Rocky Mountain wilderness of Northern BC, the âGurooveâ consists of a tight knit tribe, which is pronounced in their lyrics, music, and live theatrical intensity.
Lyrically, their songs express a strong connection to working, raising families, and addressing social and political issues that are found both in their own backyard and the world abroad. Musically, their songs are as diverse as their influences of Funk, Reggae, Ska, World Beat, Acapella, Folk, and most importantly â Rock nâ Roll. Although individual members contribute song ideas and lyrics to the group, Mamaguroove takes great pride in arranging their tunes together as a band.
Live shows are really what makes the Mamaâ¦Guroove. They have shared the stage with many fantastic local and international musicians as well as headlining over a dozen music festivals throughout BC (see Summary). It is the philosophy of Mamaguroove that stage performances is an art, in which they combine music with outrageous costumes and theatrics. From tinfoil togas (Edge of the World Music Festival); to dressing in drag and fighting aliens; to pirate planks, catapults, and âunderwear cannonsâ; to âflyingâ onto the stage from cables (Kispiox Music Festvial); to life size puppet shows; to live theatrical African dance and drum processions â Mamaguroove is a live show not to be missed!
Mamagurooveâs core members consist of four family members: Shara Gustafson (lead vocals/percussion), wife of; Seth Macdonald (guitars/vocals), who is cousin to both: Chris Chapman (Bass/Vocals) and sister; Alaina Chapman (vocals/percussion) â got it?! These members all reside on a shared acreage in Dunster, BC (two hours east of Prince George, BC), on which they: record, practice, rehearse, and organize The Robson Valley Music Festival, held annually on the last weekend of August, on the bandâs property (robsonvalleymusicfestival.com).
Mamaguroove has two independently recorded and released albums: self-titled âMamagurooveâ (2000) and, âFruit of the Grooveâ (2003). Songs from these albums have often been played on CBC radio, as well as College/University and Internet radio stations across Canada and the United States.
Over the years Mamaguroove has endured the adversity of the road and touring life. Most notably, they have: toured extensively throughout BC and ALB (approx. 40 gigs/year); completed a cross-Canada tour in 2004 (25 shows in 35 days!) and; more recently, began touring the Yukon. The band has also survived the difficulty of exiting band members (due to financial realities), and acquired new talent. Drummer Max Jones joined the band in 2004 and more recently saxophonist Dave Radies in 2006. Both Max and Dave are from Prince George, BC and original members of the Acid-Jazz group âThe Cutbank Catsâ (myspace.com/thecutbankcats).
With the addition of these two âCatsâ, Mamaguroove will be recording, releasing, and touring in 2007 their long awaited CD âResistance is Fertile!â. This original CD will be the new highlight of Mamagurooveâs career â showcasing their development and capabilities as a band, and by placing them as major contenders to professionally written original rock and roll music in Canada. Mamaguroove will be co-producing âResistance is Fertile!â with Coqi Recordsâ Corwin Fox. The release of this CD is set for April 21, 2007, in which Mamguroove will tour Northern BC to both promote âResistance is Fertileâ and the Music Festivals of Northern BC.
