Why do they call it the blues, when it makes you feel so good every time you listen to it?
Everywhere they go, they get the same feedback: âlove the new sound guys!â And yes, it is a new sound for this band thatâs been around since 1991. More edge, more drive and a rockin' blues style that will leave you asking for more. If you havenât heard this band before, youâre in for a treat. If you have, then you know why fans around Kansas City continue to choose them as a favorite, winning multiple KingCatMusic awards for âbest blues bandâ as well as the 2007 winner of the âbest live performanceâ.
While the style is blues, the mission is definitely good news, centered on the life changing grace found in Jesus Christ. So check out what all the fuss is about. Mission Blues music, it will make you feel good every time you listen to it!
To get a good understanding of the history of âMission Bluesâ, you would first need to look at how the personnel of the band has changed through the years. For example, there have been thirteen different singers (lead or backup) with three of those still remaining in the band now.
In the early days, when the group was formed (in 1991) as the âhouse bandâ of a youth outreach, it was known as the âFriday Fight Night Bandâ (itâs not really a long story but weâre still not going into it here). Once the decision was made to take the show outside the walls of the church, it was OBVIOUS that a name change was in order. For a couple of years the band was called âMission Blueâ but then a change was made to âMission Bluesâ and it has remained that ever since (at least at the time of this writing we havenât changed the name⦠besides âCapân Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shootersâ was already taken anyway).
Before the band ever made it into the studio, there were a handful of singers who spent some time with the band as the group spent a few years trying to establish a solid musical style. In 1998 it was time to record the first project which came in the form of CDs and cassette tapes (no albums or 8-tracks). That project was titled âBlues on a Missionâ and was recorded at Pat MaCateeâs studio in Raymore, Missouri, with lead vocals sung by Kent Kuss and Lori Walters.
We recorded it as quickly as we could (pretty much) because we didnât have much money. Although we worked hard on it, itâs difficult to get the kind of quality that you want on a shoestring budget so when we ran out of copies we didnât bother to reproduce it. If you own a copy, you should hang onto it because it may be worth a lot of money someday (but I really doubt it).
That was also the beginning of the âchrome doughnutsâ 3-D illustration used for the cover, which, by the way, is making a strong revival lately. Well, Iâve been asked many times what the heck thatâs all about but Iâve kept it a secret, at least until now. On second thought, I canât reveal that now either. Sorry!
A few singers and a few years later we were back in the studio to record our second CD. âVoicesâ was recorded at Air Digital in Independence, Missouri and was another step forward in establishing a distinct Mission Blues style. The only problem was that we didnât have much money so we recorded it as quickly as possible and the quality was better (but still not great). Ok, I realize that this is beginning to sound WAY TOO familiar.
The lead vocals were handled by the incomparable Robin Creason who sang with Mission Blues for over 6 years and was always a crowd favorite (when she left, our only shot at âprettyâ left too). This was also the last project that our original guitarist, Terry Wood, worked on with the band. He later went on to star in several Hollywood movies and a HBO documentary based on the life of Buddy Holly. Well, that last sentence is NOT true but it would make a great story if it was.
We actually mixed the project in the basement of Doug Gutekunstâs house (our keyboard player at the time) which is good trivia information if youâre ever asked. Speaking of trivia, there were no âchrome doughnutsâ this time but the cover shot was photographed on a storm chasing trip just east of St. Joe, Missouri.
That brings us to the latest CD, which is titled âI donât live there anymoreâ. We finally got the first shipment in early August, 2007 after beginning the project on the last week of September of 06. It was recorded at âAwestruck Studiosâ and engineered by Larry Gann who was a great influence to get the best out of us. We worked hard on it and actually had more money to spend on it, to try to get it right. We are very excited about this latest effort which is, by far, our most distinctly blues CD but it still rocks too. If you havenât heard it yet, well, seriously, what are you waiting for?
OK, now for the disclaimer. Like I said this was a brief history of the band and Iâve obviously left out many of the names and other details that have made âMission Bluesâ the group that we are today. For example Jim Moore was our first bass player but wasnât around long enough to be a part of our first recording. And Brian Smith played lead guitar in the years between our second and third projects but wasnât on any or our CDs. He and I teamed up to write a funky version of âVictim of Compromiseâ but Doc and I ended up rewriting it to be more âstraight aheadâ blues and we recorded it that way. But I figure that most of you reading this donât really care about those details anyway (unless you happen to be one of those people whose name I left out⦠Sorry about that). Thatâs all for now. Iâll try to write more if something else, historical happens.
