O.C. SMITH BIO
Grammy award nominee O.C. Smith, described as the "Most Romantic storyteller," was the lead singer for the Count Basie Orchestra before signing with CBS Records. O.C.'s career has spawned over 20 nationally charted singles, including the Grammy-winning song "Little Green Applesâ. After CBS, O.C. united with Charles Wallert, who wrote and produced the title track as well as the album for "Dreams Come True" that returned O.C. to the national charts.
The next venture for O.C. and Charles was the "Whatcha Gonna Do" album, resulting in three nationally charted singles for a total of 40 weeks. This album gave us the all time Beach Music classic, âBrendaâ, which remained number 1 for 2 years. The same album also gave us Beach Music hits, âYouâre My First, My Last My Everythingâ, âSpark Of Loveâ. Additional hits such as âThe Best Out Of Meâ, âAfter All Is Said And Doneâ, among others, established O.C. as a Beach Music Superstar.
O.C.âs success with âBrendaâ expanded a greater national awareness of Beach Music both with the general public and the recording industry.
Nominated for 6 Awards at the Third Beach Music Awards, O.C. captured 5.
O.C was the much beloved pastor and founder of The City Of Angels Church in Los Angeles where he reached out to touch people with his music and sermons for16years.
One of O.C.âs final recordings,â Save The Last Dance For Meâ reached the number one position on the Rhythm nâ Beach Top 40 Charts.
Governor Jim Hodges proclaimed June 21st, 2002, âO.C. Smith Dayâ in the State of South Carolina. The celebration of this day was a tremendous success and will be an annual event coordinated by Beach Music legends, The Embers.
O.C. was posthumously elected to the Carolina Beach Music Hall of fame in November , 2002. A true Hall OF Fame man! O.C. will be missed, but his music and his contributions to life will last forever.
