Details:
This album has a lot to do with my concept of Techno Jazz Fusion. It was the first-born and was actually made before âBlues for Sri Lankaâ. Some of ideas came about from a (unpublished) book I was writing after a journey from New York to Miami and back to New York again. Others are instrumental versions of songs I had written.
In the book about my U.S. travels I had written some rap poems. After I became acquainted with desktop recording, it occurred to me that I could use those rap ideas musically. Another idea said, âWhy donât I try to describe my journey musically insteadâ. I thought ok, but then still other ideas about some of the songs I had written wanted to be included. Itâs like having a load of kids and they all want equal or more attention than the rest.
So this is a compromise of a mixture of ideas that have all the makings of a settled friendly family quarrel. âFallen Starâ was originally a song. Maybe one day I might be able to present it, but not this time round. The other song that had lyrics that is done in Reggae rhythm here, but is not originally a reggae song, is âMy Understanding Love Has Gone Away,â The idea behind the âUniversal Bluesâ is more than a musical concept. The Blues is also a human feeling and today lots of people all over the world have the blues. Think of all the people who have in the recent past and even while you read this (if you are) right now! Who have lost so much? Right across the universe through war, famine, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes to name some of the destructions caused both by nature and human conflict. So the blues has come to everyone. The dues are much greater than when your lover has gone; then itâs just the blues.
âGoodbye Mr Robinsonâ is my own tribute to the Genius of Ray Charles. I canât tell you how much in awe I was about his musical ability. Not every one can feel that way. It depends on what your ear-brain system is conditioned to. I have been appreciative of classical music, jazz, country and western, blues and the sound of a choir. So if someone said to any great musician. âOk I want you to release a great Hank Williams song, but I want you to start the introduction with a choir, not just any choir, one that sounds like what you hear in at a Latin Mass in a European Church. Then sing the song with soul, and donât forget to have stings in the background and one more thing the instrumental solo has to be a Jazz Pianoâ. You know a lot of people would say, â Whoaâ¦that canât be done; and why do you want to do that anyway when all you need is a hillbilly band?â But Ray was able to infuse all these different genres of music into simply one song. He simply reached out for all the musical ingredients of the highest tastes to satisfy musical palettes and I was very satisfied. I knew all those sounds individually as belonging to different realms, but the way he united them made him very specialâ¦. at least to me, and I know Iâm not alone.
"Blue City" is a place in my mind where only people who had the blues go to live. There could be such a place â¦I guess.
âMiami Morningâ is about a beautiful day in Miami; and I was leaving because I had missed my flight back to London; and the only way I could get back was to go back to New York, and thatâs why I have added applause at the beginning and ending of âReturn to New Yorkâ. Oh! I almost forgot, "Enchanted" the fist track. Imagine you are in a beautiful forest in tranquil surroundings with emerald green trees and a waterfall and mellow sulight that warms you. Fascinating sounds surround you and you go into deep meditation. Your senses are transported to a peaceful place. You fall under a spell, You are "Enchanted".
