So marvelous, that even their mating ritual is known as one of the most unique phenomenon in life under the sea, and perhaps beyond. With ambition and wonder, these tiny creatures join in a beautiful ballet of intertwined tails and changing body colors. But as these lifelong partners pirouette in this predawn dance, it is the male seahorse who becomes pregnant his stomach pouch bursting with the possibilities of more than 200 sons and daughters he will one day birth.

Oddly enough, this remarkable reproduction, this anomaly on the masculine landscape has inspired more than scuba-diving onlookers. A musician, too, has found resonance in such undersea science. What results is the sound of Seahorse, a project created and manned by the multi-faceted singer/songwriter Rich Swanger. Conceived and aged in the crisp-wooded beauty of Central Pennsylvania, Rich was raised on a steady diet of popular 70's and 80's country music. An unabashed love for harmonies still found in his current works echoes these early feedings. A desire for more substance, however, led his ear to the alt-country world and many indie/rock stops along the way. After fronting a rock band in Pennsylvania during his mid-20s, Rich again found himself moved to a different sound, one of more natural and organic currents. He also discovered a vision to give his own creations the strength to swim. Building evocative, personal compositions, he stowed away song after song on an 8-track recorder in basements and bedrooms. Each song is based on a simple, structurally independent layer of acoustic guitar, wispy, melodic vocals, and a growing confidence in the studio as an instrument. An echoing piano and the swell of an electric guitar also highlight his work, still based in the foundation of harmony, spirit, and craft of songwriting. Affixed to each is an imprint of one mans inspiration, talent, and humbleness that give his sound the ability to shake the soul while swaying the spine. Armed with these home recordings, Rich has set out across the continent to follow the siren song, the song of the Seahorse. Nestled in the lush beauty of the Oregon coastline, Seahorse continues to birth songs that combine early nurturing with the ever-changing sound of the muse. - Kyle Hoover
