SONNY ROLFE "BIO" 2006
Hi, my name is Sonny Rolfe - I arrived from England to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1967 - A war baby, I remember being strafed and bombed. War time songs were probably the first music I heard, my father played his 'mouth organ' quite often, that's where I got my feel for the harmonica. I still don't play the guitar too well, but am learning. I have children and grandchildren - so far my son, Andy and two of my grandsons, Chris & Sean have shown talent. Andy is in several Bands and known as an excellent session guitarist. Unfortunately Chris & Sean live in Tasmania, too far away for me to 'jam' with them.
My songs and music come from experiences, emotions, relationships, loves and hates gathered over my lifetime on this earth. There is absolutely no doubt about it, Australia is the best place in the world to live! I've been around a bit, so this is not an uninformed statement .
I think a song is a message to the world, you want it heard, you want it listened to. Unless it's good this won't happen. The years roll by, fashions change, people change, but music is the constant. The memory jogger, the dance starter, the mood creator, for fears, tears or joy - the ultimate poetry of life. The trick is being all those things to many people in one short song .
Some of the characters from my songs are dead, some are still alive - I find most people love to be written about, be part of a song's content, perhaps they think it will make them immortal.
I rarely perform in public, but have a Circle of friends, including some very professional entertainers and musicians who like my music and perform it both in public and on CDs.
Here are some of them: Andy Rolfe, my son, a brilliant guitarist: Jane Laws, singer, songwriter and guitarist: Linda McAllister, vocalist: Steve Frawley, guitarist, singer/songwriter and Lotti Lothian, singer, who between them are the duo 'Diamond & Rust': more recently young Ami Lee, a little girl with a great voice and her father, Lee, a banjo player : Jan Osment, my partner, who fills in with backing vocals and keyboard where needed, as well as designing all the artwork I need.
Things I wish I'd done! There are not many, but I wish my father hadn't been killed as a soldier and his body buried in a foreign land with no family around him.
I like to get to know people through my music, invite comment and answer all emails/letters. If a particular song touches a nerve with you, I would like to hear about it. More than half my inspiration comes from meeting with and talking to people.
I do drink whisky - I have swung on a gate - I've had at least the average pain - I don't want to be there when I die - I have caught wealth from the sea, I've lived rough, I have a huge circle of friends, have lived under a shadow and always pray that rains come by! i suppose that's where those song titles came from.
The best I can hope for is to make you feel good inside! Cheers.
