Details:
I was raised in the vast and beautiful country of Canada, by parents with a closet full of sequined stage costumes and platform shoes.
I grew up in a house where amplifiers and guitar cases were just as much a part of the furniture as chairs and tables, and when most 7 year olds are still singing nursery rhymes in the bathtub, I was belting out entire scores of Judy Garland musicals and the Beatles Double White Album.
My name is Tami Neilson, and though I still sing the occasional campy Garland song, in more recent years I tend to sing songs of my own composition.
Beginning my career in music (not counting the bathtub concerts) I performed with my parents Ron and Betty Neilson and my two brothers Jay and Todd, making up the groupâ¦(No, no- not the Partridge Family- next guessâ¦) The Neilsons.
When I was 12 years old we hit the road full-time, touring across North America in our 34 foot motor home, performing in concerts at Country Music Festivals, sharing the stage with the likes of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn. We appeared regularly on television and radio, promoting our independent, self-titled CD, releasing 2 singles on the Canadian country music charts. We also managed to score an award-winning music video for our single "Windows to The Past", which aired on CMT.
As all of the Neilson offspring grew older- and the motor home grew smaller- we settled down in a small Canadian town where the winters were cold, crisp and white, where we would hole up in our rooms with a guitar and a tape recorder, emerging in the springtime with tapes full of shiny new songs!
We continued to perform and write music, attracting the interest of a publisher in Nashville, Tennessee, while performing regularly on Oprylandâs General Jackson Showboat, followed by a season of daily shows on Branson, Missouriâs Showboat Branson Belle.
When my parents decided to semi-retire from the music biz for a while, my brothers and I performed as a trio, until one got married and the other decided to try out a solo careerâ¦and I met a boy.
Not just any boy, mind you, but one that lived on the other side of the world, in New Zealand.
So begins a new chapter in the life of a budding recording artistâ¦letâs start all over from scratch, shall we?
So, after a few years of visiting New Zealand, dipping my little toes in the waters of a new country, seeing how I could handle being so far away from home, I arrived with my guitar and a couple suitcases (ok, massive, stretched-to-the-baggage-allowance-limit suitcases, but suitcases nonetheless) to a gorgeous new land, a gorgeous kiwi boyâ¦and a city where nobody had ever heard of me or the Neilsons. Tami who?!
However, I cracked open my guitar case, rolled up my sleeves and started to do some singing around town. A year later, I was performing at Parachute Music Festival, the Auckland Wine and Food Festival and Sky Cityâ¦off to a good start! I travelled back and forth to Nashville, writing with my publisher friend, Dennis Morgan (âI Knew You Were Waiting for Meâ, âLet Me Let Goââ¦) and on one of my trips home, went into the studio to record my very own solo studio album, âRed Dirt Angelâ.
Now, this is the part where people normally go on and on about what they sound like and what kind of musical genre they fit intoâ¦but, seeing that Iâve already gone on and on enough and your eyes are about to fall out...why donât you just have a little listen for yourself and Iâll let you decideâ¦
